Hi Everyone, Just a warning that could save you loads of cash!!
If you decide to cross the channel using a Ferry be aware of the latest way of making money from BRITTANY FERRIES.
I purchased end of July a 24H return ticket as the price was only £90 for my camper with myself and my 8 years old. At the time of booking no mention was made about having to return within the 24 hours OR Ii WOULD BE CHARGED EXTRA so I was quite surprised when coming back home to find a letter from BRITTANY FERRIES stating that they reversed my ticket to a single fare and charged my an extra £195 because I did not use the return leg!?!.......
After calling their accounts department and explained my frustration (always polite) I was told that all is explained in the terms and conditions.I was told that was nothing I could do even using my card provider/bank complaint department as their "COVER THEMSELVES" (THE LADY OWN WORD!) using small print in terms and condition. Well I hope that they spend my £195 wisely as I normally cross the channel few time a year to visit my parents, that was the first time I used BRITTANY FERRIES and will be the last, I will also encourage friends and family to use other ferry company
TO CUT SHORT:
1) DON'T USE BRITTANY FERRIES
2) READ THE TERMS AND CONDITIONS (EVEN THE SMALL SMALL PRINTS..) as they use it to make money on your back
3) DON'T USE BRITTANY FERRIES

Look to me that for a lot of peoples it is not necessary to understand things in order to argue about them

agreed (and thank you for taking the time to remind me that!!) a lot of time buying a return fare is cheaper and no other company (THAT I USED OR HEARD OFF) is charging you FOR NOT USING THEIR SERVICE WHEN YOU ALREADY PAID FOR THEM.Look to me that for a lot of peoples it is not necessary to understand things in order to argue about them

You didn't comply with the Terms & Conditions of the ticket. What were you expecting them to do?
Many companies will charge you for not using the return leg.
Hang on though....YOU are the one committing the fraud, if anyone, not Brittanny Ferries.
You got caught.British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0 -
I don't agree, say you go to your local restaurant and use a bogof but decide not to eat the other (free) main as you don't feel like it and ask the staff to do you a doggy bag. when the bill come to the table, you are being charged for both meals as the terms and condition state that the food must be consumed within the premises.....Fair?
I purchased a return ticket, paid the price at the time of booking and then decided to stay aboard for longer saving the ferry to carry me, my son and my camper and get charged and extra £195 a couple of weeks later!
I used Ryanair many times and sometime decided to stay longer and used only one leg and never being charged for saving them to carry me, never been told by anyone I know that they had the same issue too.
But hey, thanks for your input and feel free to use Brittany ferries ;-)Look to me that for a lot of peoples it is not necessary to understand things in order to argue about themDo thanks me if you find my post useful to you

First time I have actually heard of anyone actually being charged extra for this. All ferry companies and the tunnel, have it in their t&cs in an attempt to stop people using cheap day trip tickets for single or longer period returns.
Seafrance clearly state it and even say day trippers can't take luggage, taken from their T&Cs
"DAY TRIP & 36 HOUR RETURNS are not valid for single journeys or where the return journey is made on a subsequent day to the fare type you have booked. Day Trips are offered at a special rate on condition that both outward and return journeys are made on the same day, latest return by the last sailing before midnight on day of travel. SeaFrance reserves the right to charge the debit/credit card user for the appropriate fare, without further reference, up to a maximum of £95.00 (based on highest current fare for a car and up to 9 passengers) where these conditions are not adhered to. If, however, you can provide satisfactory evidence that the Day Trip conditions have been complied with and you return within the same calendar day, the appropriate refund will be made to you immediately.
5. VEHICLES TRAVELLING ON DAY TRIPS are not permitted to travel with loaded roof racks or loaded trailers, or to contain levels of luggage inconsistent with being abroad for a day trip."
How did you get back from France? Surely they would have spotted any overstay and charged you at check in for the return journey.0 -

hmm so it is you who tried to commit fraud then have the brass neck to try and turn the tables.
you bought the ticket with no intention of using it for its purpose.
I for one am glad you got charged extra, its the reason other people such as myself can have cheap day trips to france, because we follow the t&c.
Next time try buying a valid ticket for the journey you intend to make, believe it or not it actually works and you wont be charged extra.0 -
perhaps next time you should pay cash at the port..............I used to be a Travel Agent Used to be a travel agent for 23 Years, but now out of the industry. However I will help with what i can.0

P&O do something similar, its to stop people buying 2 days returns or a day return & a single back 2 weeks apart while they actually spend 2 weeks in France. If you claim they will even expect you to provide garage receipts, details of how you got home etc if you claim you broke down while on a day trip.IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.
