Surely what is best for society should be influenced by government. There are all sorts of measures that can be used using tax etc to make things fairer and to reward those that are doing something that is good for society and remove the incentive from those that are causing harm.

Thing is you're not going to get the Govt to agree owning and renting out another house is causing harm are you?

    Nice 1 !

That`s exactly what I would like to see.

The previous government seemed to stand by and watch as HPI proceeded, and debt levels grew. Those that benefited will have thought it were a good thing, those that didn`t won`t agree. When I call for a little government intervention, I hear "it`s a free market.... etc". This usually comes from those who have dined on the fruits of the credit tree. I`d say that by "doing nothing", the previous government were controlling the market to some degree.

Probably worth at least trying to get a little closer though.
that sounds very forward but sorry, i don't do internet dating :)

seriously though, you are right but politics and politicians don't work that way. i'm more than happy to look after myself than rely on my MP, prime minister or any politician.

Why not just concrete over the whole country?

It would be pointless to do so and very expensive. Building more houses along existing roads in the green belt around London would be a good start.

It's a false choice to suggest either the countryside remains as is or the country is concreted.

I don`t want to "rely" on politicians, I would just like them to not act in self interest, and simply "guide" the general public in the right direction. I believe in "looking after oneself", but I don`t believe in a "free for all". I think there are certain areas in life were those in power should be relied on to a fair degree..........

    Defence.

    Housing.

    Food.

    Energy.

I`m sure chucky, that you would agree that you do want to rely on your prime minister and politicians to ensure supply some of the above are provided for you (apart from housing, maybe ;)).

FWIW, I think the new government are making better noises than the previous one. Whether this does improve society in general is another matter. We`ll have to wait and see.

the people causing the greatest harm are the mad and bad politicians who restrict the supply of new housing plus of cause all the nimbies who they pander too.

there is simply no good reason why more building can't be allowed in most holiday areas ... numerous villages would greatly benefit from more houses / people as there would be more demand for goods and services (more local jobs) and would mean cheaper house for both the locals and holiday homes

increasing tax on holiday doesn't make anything 'fairer' ... it simply prices out any middle income person from owning a holiday home in favour of the rich

i think you need a career in politics, you could be the peoples champion :)

i can't see the current incumbents being better than the last lot - they will do the same type of damage but in different areas.

It's more likely to be families who buy a second home for holidays (not letting), so what's to stop them putting it in the wife's name?

That's what we'd have to do, instead of owning our little flat jointly. I spend 50% of my time here, as it was bought so I'd have a base near my family. I would be very angry if it became a tax cow as it is essential to my lifestyle, hotels being totally unaffordable for the amount of time I'd need to spend up here, and anyway I don't have to lug clothes for a week up on the train and back as I have all I need here.

If this is selfish then so be it. It's no worse than MPs having second homes close to where they work.
    :D I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe :D

The career in politics has been suggested to me before. Can I rely on your vote ? :rotfl:

I think I`d better stick at just talking about it rather than doing it.
