It did delete some files and a folder. I had to uninstall the Avast because it wouldn't stop. I'll toddle off and get it back again now...If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.0

looking better....now can you go into safe mode with networking and update and do a full scan with mbam ??......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple

Yep. That still crashes.

Well, I thought since I'm unable to do a full scan, I'd try another quick one. No malicious items found:

if chkdsk is crashing, it points to a possible hardware problem, maybe disk/ram/video card/overheating - describe the crash display?
try just chkdsk c:
in windows, it's faster, won't fix anything, so make a note of what it finds, if anything.
you need to rule out physical or logical corruption.
Do you ever backup?!!

beginning to think that stressing the hdd on any lengthly scans may be the beginning of the end for it.....as closed eludes to, might be time to back everything of value up sooner rather than later, just in case

Do you ever backup?
Yes, I've got an external hard drive that I've backed up the most important stuff to, although it's been a little while so almost certainly worth doing again.
TBH, the PC's about 6 years old anyway - if it does go pop it'll just give me the excuse I need to go out and buy a new one (although the cost will interfere somewhat with my plans for the Rugby World Cup in 2011.
)
Mind you, the damn thing's never been the same since I took it into a local place for repair (new motherboard IIRC).If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.0 -
I'll try the chkdsk in windows. (I assume that's Start - Run - chkdsk c: ?)
And thank you all for your help - your time is really appreciated. If nothing else, it doesn't 'arf boot up quick.

yes, do it from the cmd prompt.
start, run, cmd
chkdsk c:!!
