whats better harness or halti

  • Whichever you choose, try and buy from a pet shop which will help you fit the harness or head collar properly. As you say, training will help. In the meantime, the best thing to do when your dog starts pulling is to stop dead and, if it's a strong dog, spread your feet to brace yourself. They'll soon learn they're not getting anywhere fast!
When you look for a trainer, look for one with a good reputation. Sadly, there is no governing body for dog trainers in the UK so anybody can set up training classes, even if they've never met a dog in their entire life. It might help to work out why your dog is pulling - usually it's one of three things - eagerness to get to the park (does he pull on the way out but not on the way back?), sheer excitement of being outside (will pull all the time), or because for some reason the dog has been taught it's a bad idea to walk to heal (sadly this happens - owners use violence to try to "correct" their dog. All the dog learns is to stay away). The latter is highly unlikely if you know the dog's history! The reason for the behaviour will dictate how you train your dog.
Best of luck from the owner of a reformed arm-wrenching Lab!

    Hi,
You would be much better with a head harness than a body harness but in my opinion Halti's are not that great, I use one called a Dogmatic, (buy online) they are much stronger and don't ride up the face like a Halti can. HTH.

  • hi everyone ive been out and brought a halti but a whole new problems started, hes now refusing to walk i get him out off the front gate but then he just stops dead and refuses to move ive tried offering him treats but he just dosnt want to know its just took me 20 mins to get him 5 doors down the street i really dont know what to do should i take him out on his normal harness so hes still getting exercise or make him wait untill tomorrow and then try again with the halti please any help really would be appreciated
  • I don't really blame him, I wouldn't be keen to take a stroll with someone strapped to my face either, I'm sure that it would make me quite nervous...

Is there a way that you can tie his lead to the front of his regular harness? What type is it?

If you REALLY want to use the halti then you're going to have to condition him to it. Just click or treat him for just seeing it.. then gradually for having it closer.. then hold the treat right next to it so that he has to put his head up close to get the treat. Work up to having it on his face and giving him the treat. I really don't like haltis though so I'm not advising you to take this route at all.
  • hes absolutely fine putting it on its just once we get out side im trying a halti as its been recommended by loads off people and i relly want to put a stop to the pulling as its his one and only fault thanks for your advise though
  • I'd still have to suggest the positive conditioning - if the halti is the only thing that has changed then something about it is making him not want to go for a walk so I would go back to the basics with it.
  • just took him out again with the halti on but his lead attached to his coller not the halti and he was fine so think he made need to just get used to it

Ressurected this thread - trying to work out next purchase to try with our very determined and stubborn jack russel!! - Have come across recommendations for canny collar / mekuti / dogmatic.
Any recommendation on which would be appreciated - they all seem to work on the same principal as far as I can see .... Thanks
