whats better harness or halti

I had a totally idiotic springer spaniel who pulled me off my feet! I used to hate talking her out for walks so someone suggested a harness........she was worse with the shoulder harness. I got bruised and cut - and then saw the halti and my oh said it looked like you control a horse (and as he had horses in the past we tried it). she hated it! because for once I was in control! she couldnt use her considerable strength or weight to pull me over. she couldnt get out of it! and it took nearly an hour - but she finally gave in and walked properly at my side! from then on, the kids could take her for a walk and so could I! I would recomend the halti to anyone with a dog who WONT walk on a collar and lead. YOU have total control and it doesnt take brute strength........just a gentle check and they are there where you want them.0

I would recommend a Canny Collar (similar in shape to a conventional Halti but they tend to fit a lot better and work considerably better).0

The same applies to the halti but the harness is safer for the dog because the tension isn't going on their face or neck and putting things on a dog's head/face can make them very uncomfortable, especially around other dogs.
There's also the 300 peck method of teaching loose lead walking - I've never tried it but it gets good comment on the dog forums I frequent."No matter how little money and how few possesions you own, having a dog makes you rich." - Louis Sabin0 -
I have a staffie called George who is 7, he was a nightmare to walk, i am sure now i have one arm longer than the other. the hati was a godsend, he has stopped pulling, but he HATES it, when he sees it coming towards him he runs away. When i do finally get it on, every wall he rubs his nose on, trying to pull it off, but i will not walk him without it now.0

If you are considering a Halti, can I recommend you also consider the dogmatic.
Like a halti but in my opinion a better fit and better quality.
My girls did not get on with the haltis at all, they made their faces sore and rubbed the bridges of their noses, the dogmatics do not do this.
All my in my experience.2 angels in heaven :A0 -
We rescued a boxer cross about 18 months ago and she used to pull like crazy. Put her in a harness and she thinks she's a husky, a normal collar just allows her to pull and sound like darth vader! We now have a Cesar Millan collar, which works like a thick cord version of a choke chain, but the webbing framework, means it doesn't slide down her neck. It works like a dream. Check out his stuff (American dog whisperer) he's a genius! There are books and DVD's and I think he's on the Discovery channel, or National Geographic. He rehabilitates dogs and owners so they understand each other. He's changed our lives completely.
By the way, we went to 3 dog courses and it really didn't make any difference whatsoever, it just meant our dog was getting treats for being bad mannered! Cesar's approach is tried and tested by thousands and means your dog is being treated as a dog...it's time for you all to be 'pack leader'!0 -
Both are fine but nearly all dogs will rub either between your legs or on the floor. If you buy a harness I would suggest you buy a walkezee available from most apdt (association of pet dog trainers) or by mail order as thay do not attach at the back like most harnesses which encourage pulling but at the side - they are brilliant! We have huge success with them in our classes and our 121 sessions.0

Our newly rescued American bulldog arrived yesterday evening, complete with halti. It looks uncomfortable on her, yet she walks beautifully with - and nearly pulled me over without it! I have athritis, so being able to walk her is really good... Doing the "heel" etc with it. Hoping to start training classes with her next week, as she does need socialising. Amazing thing, in my books.0

Hi
My recommendation would be the "Dogmatic".............can't praise it enough.
Dogmatic has a website....just type in dogmatic.
Some pet supplies places sell them too.0 -
Or you could do an hours back and forth in the rain like we did. :rotfl: Not the most fun afternoon I've had but she doesn't pull anymore....at the minute I might add. She's only young yet. And she still does pull round cars (she's not sure about big ones) and dogs. Still we are making progress.Reduction in daily mortgage interest since October 23 (new mortgage) - £2.36 July 25
