  • Back clipping harnesses can make pulling worse, front clipping harnesses help a lot but you need to train the dog to walk nicely, the harness gives you an opportunity to do that but it isn't a quick fix. The same applies to the halti but the harness is safer for the dog because the tension isn't going on their face or neck and putting things on a dog's head/face can make them very uncomfortable, especially around other dogs.

Harness actually makes it easier to pull.

Do you think this guy would be pulling that truck it was attached to his neck?

Go with a halti. It causes the dog's face to pull down to the floor when they pull on their lead and should be quite easy to control.

edit: cinderella makes some good points contradicting mine.

Hi I have used a halti body harness for my springer but he still pulled like mad so I now use the halti head harness for him which seems to work better

My parents rescued a staff and he used to pull really bad and a halti body harness seems to have worked wonders for them :D

I use a halti on my standard poodle as he pulls on the lead and sniffs everything. If fitted correctly there is no pulling on the neck just a little yank on the nose if he pulls or sniffs around to much.It basically works like the nose thingy on a horse.I would never consider putting a harness on a strong or large dog as you have no control.

Personally I would take him to some dog training and get him trained to walk on a normal collar and lead.
  • thanks for all your replys think i might try a halti and also book him in for some training classes.

It might be best to see if you can find someone (maybe at training classes or a trainer) who has a halti which you can try. There are also other versions such as a dogmatic. Training lessons definitely sound like a good idea! Good luck!

It depends what a harness is designed for, as those that are non-pulling generally make it uncomfortable/off balancing when the dog pulls unlike a neutral general wear harness, similarly those designed for pulling weights/sleds are also a different design to the general sort to make it easier & more comfortable to pull the load.

I think both head collars and harnesses can help, and much depends on personal preference and also the dog as some accept one type better than the other. I used a no-pull harness on my dog and it immediately made him easier to walk when he was pulling or leaping about and after following the training he was soon rarely pulling so i now walk him back on his normal collar.
  • Some harnesses work well - like the one moomin links to, and I have also used a mikki walkrite which was effective. However, Ancol do one which says in big letters on the front 'does your dog PULL?' - my mum bought it, as her dog can pull - it was worse than useless - just a plain nylon harness - it has nothing to stop the dog pulling, and just gves the dog a bigger surface area to lean it's weight into! I thought the packaging on that was very misleading.

The Halti is brilliant, I have a growing and increasingly strong Doberman, put it on and he's like a different dog. He trots along beside us much happier as he's not choking himself on his lead. We only use it for walking and make sure he gets plenty of time running off the lead without it. I'd highly recommend it.
