Overcharged at restaurant advise

Hi,

Too cut a long story short, we had a meal at a local restaurant and the bill came to 300 pounds (apologies using a US keyboard unable to find the pound sign :)), it was late on Sat night and we never checked the bill. On Sunday we checked and have been overcharged by approx 60 pounds. After many phone calls, they have said they are not going to refund us.

Is there anything I can do?

Dispute the amount via your card?
  • Was it an independant restaurant or part of a chain

Yeah, this is the first thing that I will be doing tonight

    Its an independant restaurant
  • You could try Trading Standards as displaying one price and then charging another is I am sure illegal,

    Signed for the amount though....?
They will just say you signed for it.

I'd check with the restaurant first - decent place would refund you.

They have checked with the restaurant!

If they will not refund you.

Go again to the same place, and then only offer half the money. Tell them that is all the meal is "worth" and compare it to other places and say the quality is poor.
As long as you pay something and it's comparable to it's "worth" they can't do anything.

And how does that help? They have been overcharged. Going back and getting into a dispute when clearly it is intended as a misguided attempt to recover some of the lost money is a ridiculous suggestion.

Go to the restaurant on a busy evening and speak to the manager, they will be far more helpful if you are there and other customers are in ear shot.

    How were you overcharged?

If it was different prices then you probably have a solid argument against them.

If it was extra items then that would be very difficult to prove.
