Im going away nxt fri 20th for 5 nights to Vegas. If strikes happen they may affect my my return flight. Direct travel standard policy (which on here says is recommended but on Defaqto website is only given 2 star??)

Direct travel have said the most they will pay out is £100.

Do any insurance companies pay for extra nights accomodation and, worst case, another flight cost?

    Thanx

Your tour operator will look after you (assuming you have a package tour). Contact them if a strike is announced for any day you are supposed to travel.

(You must have chosen a DT policy with that £100 limit per person for travel delay - they do have a higher £350 limit per person on their premier policy)
  • I have spoken to numerous Travel Insurance agencies this morning, who have all told me that i will not be covered for strike action as it has been announced (despite the fact it is only a possibility with no set dates as of yet!).

I fly from Heathrow on Sat 28th August and organised the trip myself, therefore i am panicking a little.

Any advice on companies that are still willing to insure (and cover strike action) would be gratefully received.

    Regards, Steve

Marks & Spencer (5 star Defaqto rating) have said their policy is valid if booked before strike DATES anounced. Also on their annual premier policy ITC (international travellor cover) will pay out for extra accomodation costs incuured as a result of industrial action

news says strike dates to be announced on mon

Hope this helps, im booking with m&s!!

They are jumping the gun, and trying it on.

No strikes have been announced, so you should be able to get full delay cover as long as a policy includes delay due to industrial action.

One company I know who aren't imposing any strike restrictions at present are direct travel.

So in the case of an inbound flight to Heathrow, if it is delayed/cancelled due to strike action, is it the Airline that has an obligation to provide accommodation or alternative travel? Or is there no such obligation on anyone?
    Not even wrong

Surely it comes under abandonment of travel? like the ash cloud, which insurers paid out for.

If it's an EU airline - yes. The obligation for accommodation goes away if you arrange your own transport - you just get the air fare refunded once you do this

    If it's a non-EU airline - no

    is my understanding.

Hopefully they will reach agreement before, but I am going to wait until Monday before I book up. The flights could be reclaim on CC dispute. It is the consequential loss and extra expenses which concern me.

You will be OK if you fly out from an airport not run by BAA
