Unless a strike has been announced before you buy your insurance, most off the peg policies have cover for expenses incurred over a strike that affects your trip. But if strike dates have been announced by the time you buy the policy, then obviously they won't be covered.

(Read the cover that you are thinking of buying to be sure you have the cover you want.)
  • i understand this but after trying barclays, they said that they didnt cover strikes and the lady on the phone said shed be very surprised if any others did aswell, so i thought id ask to see if there was any out there that people knew of that did for certain

Surely it comes under abandonment of travel? like the ash cloud, which insurers paid out for.

    She has mislead you!

Have a look at any mainstream online policy for reassurance (eg direct travel)

I'm in the same boat as your jordant82! I'm flying out on the 27th Aug as well from Edinburgh with germanwings (budget airline).

I've honestly not got the time at the moment to search hundreds of website looking at the finite of each travel policy so really do need help from anyone on this knowledgable forum that can point me in the right direction.

    Thanks in advance!

I think if you dont have insurance now, you wont get it, it is now a known risk.

No it isn't - no strikes have been announced yet.

To be covered you would need your policy in place before any strike dates are announced.

You need to have your trip booked as well as the insurance in place.

ie. If you buy a multitrip policy today, you would then still need to book your trip before the strikes are announced to be covered.

I still need to book a connecting flight for a holiday i'm planning on leaving for on the 26th August. My travel insurance with fexicover direct states the following...

    Cancellation
"You abandoning Your Trip following a delay of more than 12 hours in the departure of Your outward flight, sea- crossing or international coach or train journey, forming part of the booked Trip’s itinerary, as a result of Strike or Industrial Action (of which You were unaware at the time You booked the Trip), adverse weather conditions, or the mechanical breakdown of, or accident of, the aircraft, sea vessel, coach or train."

    What is not covered
    claims arising from actual or planned Strike or Industrial Action which was common knowledge at the time You booked the Trip;

It reads to me that I am covered for any travel booked before the strike dates are announced.
Should I be concerned because the possible strike action is common knowledge, or not because they haven't actually announced any strike dates yet?

Also does travel insurance usually cover for things like show tickets and car hire that you might have to cancel?

    Thanks in advance...
