Have you perhaps just identified for the OP what went wrong? I.e. turn off data roaming AND cellular data ...
Connected to wifi when your screen goes black the data uses the mobile network.....remember Apple make a % on your iphone bills ! Some people dont switch off data roaming thinking the wifi they are connected to will cover the cost.....but not when your screen shuts off = data roaming bills, frankly you should not have to manually switch off data roaming beause of a (deliberate?) iphone opertaing system flaw...since 1999 I have had many data mobiles later with wifi & this issue only exists on iphones.

" I had 3G and data roaming turned off on the iPhone. I spoke to Orange about this, and they said it was due to another option called "cellular data" which appeared in the iOS 4 update. This also needs to be turned off, which I did not do as I didn't know what it was for.

Orange said that it was not their responsibility to inform customers of any changes to the software which may affect the way they use the phone or charges incurred.

So you have to turn "cellular data" off as well as 3G and data roaming. Personally, I'd be more tempted to get a rubbish phone and stick the SIM card in that whilst away. Avoids the hassle."

see the numerous other examples on line on this and other links

android and other iphone / smartphone users plesase note this comment ... "Android has had a similiar issue with this - due to working in the cloud.

Even with international roaming switched off, and syncing switched off, rebooting the phone causes it to check for contacts etc (often ignoring the above statuses). It's always a good idea to go in and change your APN address - add an extra couple of k's to the end of it - that way it doesn't matter what you forget to switch off (whether your operating system picks it up or not), and it is easy enough to change back when you get back."

i prefer instead to go manualy to apn setting and deselecting that option.

There's an app for that. :p

On a serious note, I'd just like to point out to bingy_burge that some of us Brits go abroad for the culture - and even hot countries have some of that.

  • Hi Sue if you think that's bad read on ....i Just got back from a 2 week holiday in Spain and have been told my usage for the month stands at £10,500.00 ! But my data usage counter only shows I went 16mb over my bundle. I even rang Orange half way through the week to check my roaming balance and was told all was within my initial bundle. I took out an extra 20 MB to last the second week and constantly monitored the received and sent data usage every time I used the phone. I checked and sent e-mails and checked maybe a dozen web pages such as weather etc. I certainly didn't down load movies or films as I was aware of rip off charges. I have been told the issue can't be resolved until my next billing date 12 September! I'm not saying I didn't turn on data roaming because I did, I had to sent receive e-mail etc. My point is both Apple and Orange told me exactly how to monitor the data sent and received under my mobile data settings. Every time I used my phone I checked this figure before and after to see how many MB I'd used so I could control my usage. My mobile data counter showed sent data 10MB
and received 40.3MB so to clock up a bill of 10.5k it should have shown Three thousand five hundred! At any point I had seen sudden high
numbers of MBs being used I would Have know and stopped using the
phone. Despite this being ( in their eyes) a UK record for an Orange
data roaming usage they were quite dismissive at my obvious shock and
simply kept telling me nothing could be done until my next billing date. I
have since spent numerous hours trying on my own to piece together
what may have happened with no support or sense of urgency from
Orange. Not even a call to see if I had hanged myself ! Luckily I can
prove Exactly what my data counter showed at the time along with proof
I rang Orange halfway through my holiday to check my balance and buy another data bundle of 20MB but It has certainly taken me considerable
time to piece it all together, lots of sleepless night and left me feeling
like I havnt been on holiday for five years! I would be interested if
anyone else has a similar story regarding phone data usage and what
their provider is claiming? I hope you resolve your own nightmare :-)

    Hi Mark
It is totally incredible isn't it? Not so much the record bill their computer has slapped you with (which is no surprise given Sue's story and then the national news story about iPhones and data roaming last week) but the fact that Orange have still given you no reassurance whatsoever about it.

Clearly you will not have to pay it. No court in the land would dare uphold such a ridiculous bill especially from an individual who clearly took pains to check his usage carefully as he went.

I suggest you PM 'Orange Company Representative' with whom I have had no dealings, but his tone seems on the right track! I am sure he will immediately be able to reassure you.

Hope you get some sleep soon.

It just shows that no-one can be confident that the billing system, including the handset firmwares and the tariffs are capable of producing a correct bill until it has been audited.

Just imagine how many holidaymakers have been mischarged and have just stumped up this year so far ... I woiuld not be surprised if the billed total data roaming income from UK subscribers this summer totals £100M+ and I imagine that between the lot of them they downloaded enough data to fill perhaps ten DVDs :p

Actually it is no laughing matter is it ...
  • OH god....I am readng your responses and nearly dying......today I was in a supermarket, pad by card (knowing I had money in my account) and it was rrejected, after hubby speaking to bank I fuond out that ORANGE took £1500 out of my account....I aint had a bill yet!!
I am so upset, I told the lady in Collections all about it, and she told me to claw back the money via my bank and pay £500 per month, I told her I cant, she said "TOUGH" I repeat "TOUGH", she would not give me her last name, I asked for her manager, she told me Helen, but she was out, then I asked for Helens Manager and she said Paul, who was not availble, she was even sighing at me down the phone, never ever have i recieved such poor serive, I am so gutted, I did not even know what roaming was, I thought every time I connected to internet it was wi fi......I switched to and I phone over the phone and have not even signed anything.....

I am gonna have to sell my car to pay a bill for something I did not use.......... I am so upset right now, and crying I dont know what to do....I wish I never had the I Phone....

In the same way that voice calls whilst roaming usually have a minimum billing unit of 1 minute, there may be something similar for data? So, for example, 100 connections of 1KB each may be charged the same as 100 connections of 1MB each.

    Just a guess.
