Two threads, that's fine by me. It's good to see both sides of the argument. Bank charges a rip-off ? Probably, Yes. BUT, people have to take responsibility for their actions. Burying your head in the sand and ignoring or mismanaging your finances makes you just as culpable as the banks.
Obviously many people don't fall into that category and have, through no fault of their own been dealt a rough deal, but it's not all.0 -

No it's not all. I openly admit I've been a !!!!!! (and many probably still think I am). But when you witness the help, compassion, gratitude, sympathy, kindness displayed to complete strangers on the DFW board then you stumble across this crap something needs to be said.
I'm not gonna make any friends here but anyone who can't find sympathy or a bit of 'good for you' in someone who has been screwed by the banks then screws them back are absolute selfish people who really don't deserve a place on this earth.
It is a selfish attitude and goes against everything this site stands for! :mad:0 -
Displaying a differing opinion to what you may have does not constitute selfishness in any degree ! The principles of this site are very clear and it doesn't take you to remind me of them, but that still doesn't excuse those who are not willing to take responsibility for their actions. You can't continually blame someone else !
Good luck to those who do reclaim their charges. I don't ever remember knocking them !!
I don't dispute there are many genuine hardship cases within these boards and this site has helped thousands, including myself to get their finances back in order. Those who have been assisited are then quite willing to help out complete strangers by imparting their knowledge so don't lecture people here for expressing their views.0 -

The good old "When things go wrong, blame somebody else" syndrome, I love it!!!
At the end of the day, there is a thread for people to congratulate each other on getting their bank charges back and share experiences, well this thread is for people to congratulate each other on being careful with their money and not getting charges.
Its not having a go at anyone, jeez some over on the other thread might take some tips from here about not getting charges, providing they don't win back their bank charges then run up a load more......
I don't buy into all this crap about blaming x and y for bank charges, harsh but thats the way I feel. People have to be prepared for stuff like this, I always have been whether I have been earning £2.00 an hour working in a shop or £20k a year now.
Its the same with speeding tickets and people who try to get out of them, I got one a while back, admitted I was wrong and an idiot and won't do it again. If I do though, its MY FAULT, NO EXCUSES!!!
I logon and check my bank account online almost every day and am careful with my money. I accidentally go overdrawn all the time but have my overdraft to cover me and as soon as i'm overdrawn i'll transfer some from my savings till another payment comes in and then transfer it back. Its not rocket science, it just takes people to take action instead of being lazy!0 -

Trust me - in 10 years time - the disaster will be that they are forcing people to pay for banking services that used to be free.

Don't you mean in 10 years time they will be forcing people to pay for banking services that used to be charged for 20 years ago?Don't lie, thieve, cheat or steal. The Government do not like the competition.

Just stumbled onto this thread - and Masonic, there was never a truer word spoken. Same old voices running the same old trite rubbish.
I'm probably a 1.5 () - only been charged once and never again. Being stung for £35 was more than enough of a wake up.

I know a lot of pensioners who live in sheltered accommodation. They have to have an account of some sort to have pensions and any other benefits paid into. I estimate however that over 75% of them pay all their bills over the bank counter, never using direct debits etc. as most of them have a real fear of debt. In fact I know 1 person that pays her £6 a week for water each and every week.
If you cannot manage your affairs then this is the only way to avoid bank charges and debt. It is going back to how it used to be, if you don't have the money then you can't spend it. Better to live on beans on toast or cereal if you have spent all your money than start up the vicious cycle of charges on charges.0 -
I'm a 2 - was charged £70 for bouncing 2 standing orders earlier this year, when I forgot to transfer enough money into my current account to cover them. They go out on the first of each month, & I simply lost track of the date & didn't realise they were due to be paid!
I don't have a strong opinion either way on the reclaiming charges issue (can see both sides of the argument), but I won't be trying to reclaim these - it was the first time I've had to pay bank charges & was totally my own fault for being careless. I'm now much more careful about keeping track of my account balances & payment dates, so it was a good incentive to get organised & ensure it'll never happen again.0
