Flying to Thailand

Hello,

We are looking to book a holiday in Thailand, thinking perhaps one of the islands. Does anyone know if it is possible to fly direct to any of the islands from the UK? I'm hoping to try and avoid Bangkok due to recent events there. Ideally want to fly from Manchester, but would fly from London if necessary.

Many thanks!

I think you have to go via Bangkok (even if it is just for a couple of hours in the airport)

You'll have to go through BKK and fly from Heathrow. You can fly Eva, Thai, BA or Qantas. I might be tempted to look for a flight with Thai as they may serve your final destination which will make connecting easier. They're double daily from LHR and you can probably grab a codeshare flight on BMI from MAN and have your bags checked all the way through.

Thanks for the advice. So looks like I'll have to go via Bangkok. Was just reluctant to...also have a 2 year old in tow so we're not quite as adventurous and carefree as we used to be with things like this! My trouble now is I read the foreign office advice and scare myself in to not going anywhere! Anyone flown in to Bangkok recently? Any problems? Has it all calmed down?

If there is a demo in London, does it mean that you are scared to fly into Heathrow?

'Red shirts' went home a while ago.
  • You don't have to fly into Bangkok if you only plan to go to Phuket . Singapore airlines fly through their hub Singapore then their subsidiary Silk Air fly direct to Phuket (Phuket is an International airport) You can fly to Koh Samui from Phuket I think with Bangkok Airways.

You can also use Malaysia Airlines via KL then onto Phuket. Thai Airways have the best schedule.

I would go KL with MAS then to Phuket but Thailand is very safe.
    Used to live there

That is more than just a sweeping statement.

If you're going to Phuket or Samui, you certainly don't need to transit in Bangkok.

From the UK, you can fly direct or indirect to Singapore, Kuala Lumpur or Hong Kong (latter probably more costly, net) and take a budget or non-budget airline to Phuket or Samui, assuming it's one of these islands you're going to. If not, there are other options.

You don't need to go near Bangkok at any point.

Google for Phuket airport's website and see which airlines fly there.

Wikipedia's relevant pages are very good for each airport. There are now flights from KL & Singapore to Krabi which is handy for some islands. You won't get 'low cost' into Koh Samui as Bangkok Airways owns the airport, but Firefly & Berjaya Air from Subang Airport in KL can be 'reasonable'. Or ask someone about the Surat Thani option.

Singapore Airlines have good timed connections to the Bangkok Airways daily Singapore flight from Koh Samui from their Heathrow flights, but ropey on the way out on the Manchester flight. This is a good choice if money is not an issue. I think (but happy to be corrected) that Singapore Airlines is the only single change option to any Thai Islands.

Mind you, i'd go back to Bangkok in a flash. It's been almost 11 months and i'm missing it.
