New problem - my partner set up the router and does not have the password etc to get in and change security settings. So I think I am stuck with getting a new one? BillScarab suggested a Netgear. There is one WRG614 model at just over £30. I am in a small flat with one laptop needing access - woudl this suffice? THANK YOU.

I sort of read this as they may have changed the password and forgot it.

Panic over if its not the case!
That gum you like is coming back in style.

So you have managed to do a factory restore and logged in using the defaults?
WPA-PSK (pre shared key) should be fine.
Then just configure your internet connection with your ISP u/n and p/w.

    Doh!

Statements like that will simply confuse the already confused OP, beacuase there is no ISP username/password to enter!
 Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:
  • Sorry but i cant post links as ive not posted enough. You want WPA-PSK as mentioned above as thats a decent level of security. Create a password that you like with lots of random characters in, ie !Il1k3Th1$Pl@c3! then hit apply. You dont need any other settings as the ISP (Virgin media) are set already, this is purely setting up the laptops connection to the Wireless functionality of the router nothing more!

I would have two words for any neighbour who asked for unrestricted access to my internet connection and network; the second one is 'off' and the first begins with B or F ......

If they hadn't bought a filing cabinet yet, would you let them rummage around in yours, where all your bank statements, utility bills and financial data are kept, and give them a few inches of space in their to store theirs?

If they hadn't bought a wardrobe, would you let them have a few feet of rail and shelf space so that they could store their clothes for a while?

Would it cause a big 'falling out' with them if you refused either of these requests? No.

Should you have refused access to your connection? Yes. Immediately. For good measure, you might have told them to go outside and get some fresh air instead of sitting at their laptop.
  • Lets understand that for the neighbours to gain access to files/folders etc they would need either the password and username associated with that laptop or be clued up with hacking MS OS's. We all know that trying to file share on Windows is a pain at the best of times. I wouldnt worry too much about that, the main issue is to stop them using a service that you pay for without your knowledge. Of course im not condoning having weak passwords and security on your wireless network, you should do all you can to prevent intruders, but the issue you are having here is you want to stop them accessing your network all together. If indeed they have accessed your personel stuff there isnt a lot you can do about that now, other than secure it going forward!

type in browser 192.168.1.1 to bring up router admin.
defaults are no userID and password of admin, I believe.

you can change the security key through this interface.

prob want to change default password too!
    This :T

You can also use the MAC Filter settings if you are still worried.

I understood that the OP had to do a factory reset due to the router password being forgotten. If so the above info will be required-unless VM do it differently.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

It is a cable router so no username/password is stored in the router.

  • Well the easiest way to see if the neighbour is using the connection...

Pull out the cable/phone line connection and wait for the knock on the door.

As an precautionary step, you could use the "MAC filter" that's listed in the user manual. A mate of mine did that and it works quite well (in addition to having a WPA password)
:exclamatiTo the internet.. I need to complain about something!
  • i'm glad to see people keep repeating various things already entered in this thread, again and again. why? I thought we were here to help the OP. I'd be somewhat surprised if that has been the result.
    Friendly greeting!
