You don't need to buy another router. The one you have supports WPA encryption which is much more secure than WEP.
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die

Are you on Virgin Media (cable service) or Virgin National (ADSL service)? If VM cable you need a cable router, if ADSL you need a modem router. You just need a wireless 'G' router for a basic connection.
And please please don't buy a router (or anything else) from PCW...
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

  • New problem - my partner set up the router and does not have the password etc to get in and change security settings. So I think I am stuck with getting a new one? BillScarab suggested a Netgear. There is one WRG614 model at just over £30. I am in a small flat with one laptop needing access - woudl this suffice? THANK YOU.

No, you just need to do a factory reset on the router, usually a button on the back, that will restore it to the default u/n and p/w settings which were give earlier.
Then set it up using WPA security and for good measure change the router u/n and p/w to something different.
The only other info you will need is your ISP's username and password.

Yes, and now if I look on your C: drive, I see you have windows installed on your PC

Mate you dont need a new router, all modern day routers do secure wireless. WPA is what you are looking for, so as others have mentined, log into the router using Internet Explorer or whatever internet browser you use with the address that relates to your Default Gateway (BillScarab told you how to obtain the IP information, Default Gateway is there)

Once you put that in you will be promted for a username and password, if you havent changed this then its blank username and admin password as mentioned by danthemoneysavingman. Once logged in you need to follow this:
    www6.nohold.net/Cisco2/ukp.aspx?vw=1&docid=a4055e951b0143c2985d56304d321b6c_759.xml&pid=96&respid=0&snid=24&dispid=0&cpage=search
    All the best!

There should be a reset button on the router. Unplug the router, hold the reset button then plug it back in and keep holding for about 30 seconds. This will reset the router to factory defaults

Assuming you are on Virgin cable then you could always buy a new wireless router from them.
    Now I'm assuming Virgin Cable:-
For the time being you could disconnect the router from your cable modem, and connect the modem to your computer using the ethernet cable.
Then noone will have access to your broadband.

As above please don't go to PC Dixon's Curry World, if you don't fancy Virgin then there is always Amazon.

That gum you like is coming back in style.
