My Sony VGN FZ series laptop developed a faulty graphics card when it was 2.5 years old. I phoned Sony who said they would replace under guarantee if the card was faulty.

They collected next day, fitted new mainboard free of charge, and it was returned within 5 days. Apparently graphic card failure is a known fault with that particular PC, and guaranteed for 4 years.

If the problem I was having with the PC - fuzzy screen, scrambled, zig-zags) had been due to some other fault, it would have cost approximately £50 for them to return the PC.

It's definitely worth phoning Sony to hear what they say.

    Good luck

soga says a product should last a reasonable amount of time, you should contact the retailer quoting it.

It's not the nvidia gpu problem, which was widescale

What/Who is Soga? :S I mean I kinda expected a couple of years more from the laptop to be honest.
  • So, the charger's working, but you cant get any charge in the battery at all? Or do you think we're past that now?
    Best of luck

It isn't necessarily the mobo. Could be the charging pin has failed (the socket where the mains adaptor plugs in has detached from the mobo-probably the most common fault on any laptop, especially if you've tripped over the mains lead a couple of times and stressed it). This would cost around £100 to fix.
Suggest you take it to an independent laptop repair shop (no, not PCW), they will diagnose the problem for about £25, and if you then proceed with the repair then that cost is normally offset against the bill.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
