There should be basic instructions with it....you need to select the DC Voltage setting on the dial for this purpose. No free lunch, and no free laptop

expecting 12V so select a setting like "20V", touch red to pin and black to outer metal bit (unsure as dunno what your cable end looks like)
12V was a pure guess, should say what voltage DC to expect on the transformer sticker.Friendly greeting!0 -
It says on the Sony thing AC Adapter 19.5V (so I should set to 20?)
I don't get it? If the big block thing isn't plugged into a mains socket, then how will it have any voltage at all? *confused*
Am I supposed to plug it in a while before doing it?0 -
reckon that'll do. any reading on the dial?Friendly greeting!0

Am I supposed to plug it in for a while before? Or just do it?0

Yes, you have to plug it in, you are measuring the output-no mains AC power means no DC output.
You need to select DC Volts on it though, there must be some instructions with it?No free lunch, and no free laptop

it says DC voltage measurement : set rotary switch to DCV position (20v) done that, then it says
Connect test leads across the source or load being measured, read voltage on machine thing.
So where do I put the black and red probes?!0 -
Never mind, I had to put the black probe on the outside of the little cable thing, and the red one on the inside, it worked 19.60V :'( so now that must mean it's my motherboard *cries*0
