Vacuum sealers for food - money-saving or not?

Ok, update on the Lidl freezer bags.
I managed to get them to vac the food if the bag sizes were small ie the 3ltr bag cut into 4.
However, anything bigger didn't vac properly.
I think it's because my foodsaver isn't as powerful as more expensive ones.
I shall check the packets in a few days to see if they have let in any air.0 -
I have a shopping basket full of stuff and it comes to £147.35
This is for the Eiffel freshpack pro ( the one with the chamber to stop accidents with liquids) a roll of bags, 3 cannisters and next day delivery :eek:Just got to pluck up courage to hit the "go to checkout" button
SDPlanning on starting the GC again soon0 -
Well i plucked up the courage and bought it
It should be delivered to my work address on Thursday and to guarrantee that i got it before we go away i paid the extra for the delivery which is something that i absolutely NEVER do
Look at what you peeps have made me do :rotfl: I never spend any money lol i usually try everything to get out of it.
Bet i still can`t sleep :rotfl:
Thanks for this thread and all the advice everyone, you`ve helped me decide what to do and make a purchase of something that should be very useful and at the end of the day will save us far more than the initial outlay :A

So this is what you get up to while i'm away!!!
I got back late last night and really wanted to check the thread but hubby would surely think i'd gone mad so I had a cup of tea and went to bed.
SB44, hooray it worked!! Keep us updated won't you? Just let us know if it loses seal or anything over the next few days?
Sunnyday Hey I ordered almost the same as you! Can't wait for it to arrive so I can start playing!
Kittie are you saying that you vac pack things like tomatoes in jars and leave them on the side and just take them out when you need them and reseal or are you talking about long term storage? I'm really interested in this.
I'm a jam maker and never have any probs with the seals 'sealing' however a tip I got was to turn the jars up side down for a couple of mins when you first pour in the hot liquid and put the lid on. When you turn them the right way round you can see the jam sucking down the lid and sealing it.0 -

Well, the smaller packet with the seeds in has stayed sealed but the slightly bigger one, the one that I put some boiled sweets in to test has lost its seal.
I am going to get some more resealable bags today with bigger 'zips' (you know what I mean) and give those a go.
Regarding the canisters.
I buy the bags of mixed salad from Aldi but they tend to go brown after a few days.
I put some in a vac canister and kept in the fridge for well over a week. Not sure how long it would keep for, may have to experiment with that one next.0 -
Thanks SB. Drat, not so good news on the boiled sweets one.
I like the idea of keeping salad in the cannister as I always make a big dish full and have some left but it only lasts a day before beginning to go brown.
Anyway i've had my dispatch email so hopefully it will be here tomorrow. Luckily its my farmers market this weekend (they are only once a month) so i'm going to stock up and vacuum pack everything.
Will get some more Lidl freezer bags as i've run out and then I'm ready to give it a shot. I've also got some straws in the pantry so I can try out that theory as well.
Too exciting!0 -

Nope!
Will get some Tesco bags tomorrow, cut off the strip and have another go.
I'll let you know how I get on.0 -
Thought I'd pop in and say hi. I have one of the JML food savers which, having recently started living on my own, I find really useful when I havent quite got used to cooking for one
I'm interesting in the alternative bags you are trying, although I still have plenty of rolls that I bought with the food saver, so I shall keep an eye on your experiments :TNil Illegitimi desperandum carborundum

Hi Scorpio!
Does your JML use smooth bags or the ones which are patterned?
