You can't even burn a full DVD with W98 because the biggest file size it can handle in one hit is 4GB (a DVD is 4.7GB). Does that mean they should move backwards and decrease DVD size so we can use these with an older system? This is crazy.

This is nothing to do with falling for sales pitches. It has everything to do with the advance of technology.

It may horrify you to hear this, but the majority of we plain, everyday computer users out here have never 'burned a full DVD' in our lives and probably never will. You are so caught up in your techie world that you think everyone is like you.

    Not so.

I don't know who 'Moore' is but he can take his 'Law' and sling it in his own, no doubt bulging cash register. Some of us out here buy things when there's an actual NEED, not just when our ego can't bear to be without the latest in hype-oozing (but otherwise not really all that much better than what was before) technocrap...

Have you noticed that there are people who buy a car to get them from A to B. .. and then there are those who just have to buy this year's model even though the only difference from last year's is that it has a few more buttons to press and has cream-coloured upholstery.

Care to guess which kind of motorist Bill Gates wants you to be?

It has EVERYTHING to do with sales pitches.

Have you considered that it may be your way of thinking that is in the minority here?

You seem to be saying that the massed marketing departments of all the major software/hardware manufacturers are missing a big trick here. Instead of spending billions developing newer, more powerful software/hardware. All they need to do is keep mass producing old, outdated programs, and the PCs to run them on. Why did they ever make the move to GUI OS's (before you ask, W98 is one)? I'm sure that plenty out there would still rather use BASIC than a nice user friendly OS. I'm sure you could handle something along these lines......

Yep, I considered it - but after I'd stopped rolling round on the floor laughing, I realised: hey, does my car have 'sat nav'? No. Does my car have ABS? No. Does my car have infra-red, remote-control, military-level encryption central locking? No... it's got a key.

Am I about to be lectured by someone whose Lotus-Ferrari-Porsche Turbo Bastárd has all these features but who will be junking it next year because it won't have an on-board swimming pool?

    No.

    Why not? Because:

    A. I have limited finances - I save money whenever I can.

    B. My car still gets me from A to B, actually...

I've got no problem with anyone using any system that does the job for them. I still use an older W98 system that works perfectly for what I use it for. I know its limitations though, and have more modern PCs to run more advanced applications.

I do have a problem when the same person thnks we are 'nerds' because we also need more advanced software/hardware to use our computers properly, and to the full ability that we need.
