The second one is a good scanner, but I think the free version is on demand only, not resident. Avast is resident.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
Older Windows 98 compatible versions of Zone Alarm are available here:

Hmm... quite a diversity of opinion.
I have all the Zone Alarm updates up to the time when the new ones became non-compatible.

The oldest of my lappies dates from 2000 and has 98 on it. I also find 98 a much better system and I felt I could navigate it and control it more easily. Recently I have uninstalled Norton from it and installed AVG, AD-aware, Spybot and Sygate. It's a slow computer, I think only 128 Ram, but it still works fine and I use it as a backup.
Shame that Microsoft will eventually phase it out. XP is not its equal, in my opinion.Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.0 -
Actually, MS have already stopped support for W98 (last July was the last update).
As far as XP.............I think that MS have finally got this to a decent OS now. There's no comparison in reality between W98 and XP. The capabilities of XP far outweighs W98. I still use my old W98 machine a lot, but the restrictions I come accross keep forcing me to transfer data onto the XP machine to be able to work on it properly. How many surrealists does it take to change a lightbulb?

Microsoft seems hell-bent on torpedoing W98 by abandoning online support (with the idea of forcing me to use a newer operating system) and has been followed down this dastardly route by Grisoft whose AVG virus killer I have installed currently.
It's thought that, as time goes by, W98 will become ever more prone to viral attack and my system will end up running very slowly/backwards!
Help!
Sorry if this topic has been raised before.
Grab a copy of norton antivirus 2006 or 2005 if you can find one.
The 2006 edition comes with 2005 and that will run on 98.

You can get it for 17.99 at play with free delivery

You should be ok with this 2005 edition as well and thats only £8.

But Avast is totally free, and works perfectly well with W98. AVG is also free and works perfectly well with W98.How many surrealists does it take to change a lightbulb?

I moved over to Avast on my Win98 system - AVG did state they were dropping support and short time after that it appeared to be downloading the full program rather than just updates (every day was over 3mb and needed a re-boot).
Curiously enough had the same (with AVG) on Win2k - think it started a couple of weeks later, but maybe my usage patterns. No change on XP though, just the usual smallish updates.0
