Windows 98 anti-virus software

Does anyone know of any virus killer that will run on W98?

Microsoft seems hell-bent on torpedoing W98 by abandoning online support (with the idea of forcing me to use a newer operating system) and has been followed down this dastardly route by Grisoft whose AVG virus killer I have installed currently.

It's thought that, as time goes by, W98 will become ever more prone to viral attack and my system will end up running very slowly/backwards!

Help!

  • Absolutely agree, ts_aly. Microsoft is acting the villain again.

Win98SE in some respects is more of a final O/S than where 2000 and XP are.

Microsoft 'almost' got everything finally right with 98SE, and then dropped it.

This isn't about creating the best O/S. It's about Microsoft having a continuing income.

Install Windows 98SE on a dual-processor system with a 250 Gig SATA-II Raid array and 2048MB of DDR2 ram and enjoy your lack of performance.

So you're saying that anyone different to you should be laughed at and is wrong.

Cor. I bet you're fun. You're not getting in my knickers big boy.

Oh, and I don't need a system like yours, as 90% of my processing power isn't being swallowed in keeping the O/S running alone.

Try embedded development and working within a 1Kbyte segment. Next time you need the ABS in your car, think of me.

And to think I used to have to pay for a Saturday nights entertainment!:T
  • No need to be so sensitive. I found your observations on the merits of 98se compared with XP somewhat amusing. Brought to mind Python's Life of Brian, "What have the Romans ever done for us?" Don't take it so personally; I'm not laughing at you.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion but I suggest that an objective comparison, upon which my high performance system allusion was based, would indicate you are very much in the minority.

btw - how do you know (a) what os I use and (b) how much processing power it uses? Don't think I said I was an XP user or any other os for that matter.

Next time I need the ABS in my car I somehow doubt I'll be thinking of you, no matter how commendable your contribution to road safety and the greater common good. I'll more probably be thinking "F*%k, that was close!" :D

I think 98 being dropped had more to do with the limitations this OS was coming up against with newer hardware available (Moores law in action). I've always liked W98SE and still run this on an old machine, but this OS wouldn't work at all well on my newest build.

FAT32 doesn't work too well with bigger HDDs, NTFS is better for these. W98 will work with a maximum 512MB RAM (would make any more a waste of money). You couldn't even copy and edit a full DVD using W98 because the biggest file size it can run is 4GB (a DVD is 4.7GB).

Surely it makes sense for MS to spend money developing OS's that can keep up with/run latest spec hardware?

    In answer to the OP...........

Avast also runs perfectly well with W98SE.

If they're as archaic as your os I'm not so sure I'd even want to! ;)

  • Er... all of which doesn't answer my request for help.

As I understand it, AVG updates do NOT run on W98 any more. It's a similar situation with Zone Alarm firewall.

Maybe I'm wrong... I don't pretend any intimate familiarity (shudder) with what goes on INSIDE my computer... I just want it to WORK.

I'd be pleased to hear from those who DO find some kind of perverse interest in the minutiae of PC-dom that I have misunderstood the situation and that everything is hunkey-dory. If not, then some advice would come a close second. Bickering is third by several lengths...
