  • Normal adult toothpaste for me too as a child. I'm now 33 and never had to have a filling! And I have regular check ups.

Can anyone recommend a 'mild mint' flavoured toothpaste ? Or any adult toothpaste that isnt mint ?

My 5 year old doesn't like strong mint flavours, doesn't mind mild spearmint though.

After reading through this thread I'm going to switch the youngest two children to adult toothpaste, but as said above need recommendation's.

    Many Thanks
  • Off topic but I was born in 66 and I'm not sure if dental hygiene was different then or if our dentist was a sadistic Bar steward but we always seemed to need fillings or something pulling out. Back then they did the drilling with out any type of anaesthetic and it was horrid, at least they knocked you out for the extraction. Only recently I have found a sympathetic dentist and I don't panic any more when going to see him, I still keep my eyes shut for the entire proceedings. My teeth are all wonky too but boys didn't get braces then only girls which is why my sister has straight teeth and mine are all over the place, they still work though which is the important thing.
Nothing to see here, move along.

Glad it's not just me who went through the fillings with no anaesthetic thing. I remember having a filling when I was about 7 and the dentist for some reason used some kind of pick attachment after drilling on my tooth and hit a nerve and I almost flew out of the chair. In fact when he was drilling I think that's how he knew he'd gone far enough, when you screamed in pain. He also never wore gloves or a mask or anything either (although I don't know if that was standard then).

Consequently I've not been to the dentist since I was about 15 although I probably should, but truth be told I'm absolutely terrified. However I make sure my two children go every six months and have always ensured they brush their teeth thoroughly (too much perhaps if the white spots on DD's teeth are anything to go by) - I don't want them to end up with my issues. I usually sit by the door while they're being examined trying to hide the fact that I feel faint! They both love going though so I'm obviously hiding it well!

Yes it looks like we made it to the end

Spots and marks in/on teeth can have many causes - and some of the causes are unknown!

I doubt the ones on your kids teeth are important, otherwise your dentist will have mentioned it. It would be best to ask about them next time you go. That would give you a more accurate answer than any guess I could come up with without seeing them.

I doubt it would be due to fluoride though, given what you've said. They've never lived with you in an area where fluoride is added to the water have they? (There are only a handfull of areas where it is. Ntably Birmingham or Gateshead?
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

Thanks TS, that puts my mind at rest a bit. We're in South Wales (always have been) so we're not flouridated. I'll definitely mention it though on their next visit to the dentist which will be in November-ish I think.

So are most adult toothpastes OK or should I stick to the regular, non whitening. I usually buy sensitive toothpaste as the one I get has no SLS in it. Would that be suitable for a toddler do you think Toothsmith?

    Hiya,
I'm not so keen on mint either and I use aquafresh iso-active, it's citrus & mint - bright green! It's in a metal canister. You can still taste mint, but it's definitely better than normal toothpaste (mintness wise)
I have no idea how much it was though, I think I bought it on special offer.
