Fluoride tablets are 'out' as well now Sue.
It was fluoride tablets becoming fashionable that meant that low flouride kids toothpastes were thought to be necessary. (Some kids having tablets and swallowing quantities of full strength adult toothpaste were developing mottled teeth). But fewer people bothered to get or use fluoride tablets, and those that did were never that good at giving them every day for the required time. Plus, it's only really a very small window you have for fluoride tablets to be much use (Whilst the crowns of the adult teeth are developing)
It's now been shown that topical fluoride is a much better way to get fluoride benefits onto teeth - which means adult fluoride toothpastes, and occasional topical fluoride gel application by dentists or dental nurses doing oral health promotions.
It's all come full circle! How to find a dentist.
1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.0 -
Our daughter, who is 1 Y/O is an utter pain to clean her teeth, she has the front 8 but won't let us do it. We got a brush baby, http://www.brushbaby.co.uk/Testimonials/ that we put the tooth paste on and she chews on that. I don't know if these things are that great but it's better than nothing. We have just got her a different brush to use but she doesn't know how to brush and again she won't let us do it for her.
When should we get her in to see a dentist?Nothing to see here, move along.0 -
Now.
I like to see kids from as young as possible.
Even with no teeth. It's just as much about offering hints n' tips to parents about things like good diet, brushing techniques, what toothpastes to use etc as it is about looking at teeth.
Getting the kid used to coming from before they can remember, and it's always a fun experience.
The WORST thing is if a kid's first visit is because of a toothache. Unless you're very very careful, then you end up with a kid who's a phobic for life! How to find a dentist.

Slightly OT, but Toothsmith could you elaborate on "mottled teeth" and what the implications are please? I ask because DD is 7 and has her two front adult teeth almost fully through now and one of them has an appearance that could be described as "mottled". She's always used a "kids" toothpaste (although having read this thread we will be moving to adult toothpaste tout suite!) and visits the dentist every six months where there have been no issues. In fact the last visit was about two weeks ago and this "mottling" wasn't mentioned (and I forgot to ask).
JxxAnd it looks like we made it once again
Yes it looks like we made it to the end0 -
well delain i have the same problem but the other way around.. DIL insists i use only childrens toothpaste.. that pink stuff. i started using normal toothpaste just a litle pea size blob and was told not to use it anymore. i give up, i used normal for my kids never did any harm and had normal toothpaste myself no harm done. i have no idea how i can get the gchildren off this pink stuff, both children spit as i have taught them with no trouble and G/S is only 2. i wish i could open toothpase tube and subsitute it lol2016 Jan Wins: 9ct white Gold Diamond Necklace £530.00, Doro Easy phone.
