Yes, it is a weak point. I dont dispute that. However it is made out to be worse situation than it really is. Its gotten to the point "Oh, its an MG Rover, it must have head gasket problems" which is very much unfair

Oh well, keeps them cheap for me :D

Well, at least I was more specific than just "MG Rover" :p
  • I'm trying to way up the options, however, I really like the look of the earlier Mazda MX5.
  • I've also noticed a difference in price between cars bought in the south & cars bought in the north.

Seems southern cars are a lot cheaper. Very bizarre.

I think you miss my point.... Its the whole MG Rover brand that has been tarnished. And the smaller capacity engines have exactly the same level of problems from what I have seen :p

If you are looking to buy a second hand car, a few places to recommend are eBay, Gumtree, AutoTrader and Trade-It.

I have seen a few Puma's about over the past year, ranging from £500 to £2500.

I was going to buy a Puma, never had one, but in the end opted for the Mondeo Ghia X as it has 4 doors, a 2 door would not be much use to me with the family!
  • Been looking on ebay, but as with what I've found with other websites, there ain't many reasonably priced Mazda MX5s.

Can anyone give me any advice on what I should be looking for in a Mazda MX5?

TDMMDI - I've just bought a Mazda MX5 and traded in my Puma, picking it up tomorrow - where in the country are you?

Bought is to buy. Brought is to bring.

Its not as bad as its made out to be! One of my pet hates people bringing that up straight away.

If the car is WELL looked after then there should be no HG problem at all, if there has been and the HG replaced properly then it should be good for the rest of the life of the car.

On the subject of the MX5, the older versions are kinda on the cusp of classic status and some sellers have realised this and the price inflated slightly. I have to admit that I was thinking of getting one actually.....
Disagree in some respects, seen plenty of well cared for cars HGF, ultimately the K-Series is a good engine on paper, but crap in reality. It is a rubbish design, no matter how you try and dress it up, in my opinion.

The MX-5 is a great little car, bullet proof, good fun to drive. Normally there is a big price difference between those with power steering, and those without though.......

Have a one owner, pristine example of a late ('97) mk1 UK MX-5 in the house, 1.8 version, full Mazda service history, one older gentleman (engineer) as as previous owner and every tiny scrap of paper related to the car since it left Mazda. Bought for £950 with a new MOT due to lack of PAS..... It's definately not for girls without PAS.

The Puma is ultimately a Fiesta, mechanically and structure wise it's an old Fiesta unfortunately. Only the panels make it different to a Fiesta (even the dashboard is identical) litterally the body panels are the difference. They unfortunately rot, and drop value the same as an old Fiesta.

    Regards,
    Andy
