I find that bleach sorts out the smell problem, but the maggot issue really becomes a problem in warmer weather. From a practical point of view, since flies will lay eggs within minutes on anything they can find in the bin, it's probably better to double wrap anything that they might have got to before putting it out for collection in an attempt to contain the problem in a bag....

For more info, some nice people in Peterborough have given quite a lot of thought to the issue:

Once its washed and clean just leave it open till you need to use it again... the fresh air and sunshine seem to take care of the smell . We are lucky in that all food goes in the special green bin and our council seem to have got the bin just right as it has a locking handle so no flies can get in once the handle is in the right position.... this one is quite small and I jet wash it every time it is emptied and then leave it open till I need it again.....

Another solution to the maggot problem would to be to take up fishing. The little perishers cost a fortune when you have to buy them.........
  • After you have cleaned the bin, sprinkle some bicarbonate of soda in the bottom. This will absorb any smells.
  • We have had terrible problems with maggots in our bin this summer, I always put leftovers in plastic bags and tie them up, I got some dustbin powder which I use regularly and dh washes the bin out when its emptied. The problem is our bins are emptied fortnightly and the maggots seem to appear in the second week, wish they were emptied weekly.
