Wheelie bin smell

Can anyone suggest anything else to get rid of the stink in my wheelie bin? Following the very hot weather plus old chicken pieces etc a million+ maggotts infested it. I have now cleaned it thoroughly with a bleach and water solution followed by hot soapy water then sprayed air freshener inside. It looks clean now but still has a noticable stink although not as bad as it was.....

hi, i pressure wash mine, bought a cheap pressure washer cos the bloke in his van charges 6 quid a go round here, figured a 30 quid pressure washer would work out cheaper eventually, i even do my neighbours cos i love using it !!!!!!!! it doesnt smell and its clean, ensure all your rubbish is not spilling out ( i use old carrier bags for rubbish, recycle paper, plastic, tins and bottles and compost old veg, peeling etc.....)

Maybe try chucking some zoflora in after its emptied ? hth
    mustn't grumble

Got myself some Jeyes Freshbin powder from Aldi a while back:

I haven't got round to trying it yet, so can't comment on how effective it is.

  • I usually put a couple of handfuls of Tesco Value cat litter in mine just after its been emptied, it sops up any odd juices that escapes out of the bin bags, I don’t think it would be much help with the smells directly, although any cat litter should have a slight deodorizing effect.
I love my spell checker, it stops me making all sorts of stupid smelling mistakes.
  • my wife sprinkles some citronella oil in the bin which she gets from boots chemists.
    has a nice lemony smell.
she also uses it for insect bites...put some on your ankles, amongst other uses.
a little seems to go a long way.

I just use a jet washer or a solution of disinfectant and a yard brush to scrub inside. Best way to avoid it is to bag your rubbish up but sometimes they do leak.
  • I tend to bag my waste up in carrier bags first of all then into the black sack. Having said that, anything that would normally rot goes into my compost bin which alleviates the problem a little.
  • Pressure wash followed by a slugg of disinfectant does it for us!
I'm mad!!!! :rotfl::jand celebrating everyday every year!!!
  • well thankyou everyone for these useful tips! The bio washing powder one sounds interesting as this stuff works wonders on the BBQ grill so should do a good turn in the bin!

I should add that this is the first time I've cleaned out the bin in probably 4 years!! and have come to the conclusion that a spray of disinfectant every 2 weeks after emptying will do the trick.

One tip I have just heard about may be of interest: For very smelly stuff like fish/meat carcasses, wrap well in plastic carrier bags then put in freezer until bin emptying day. Haven't tried this yet but it sounds good!
