Marks and Spencer - Damage caused to property during delivery

Options
I have recently tried to take delivery of a sofa bed from M&S to my 1st floor. The mechanism was taken out of the sofabed to help get up the stairs, when they tried to get the actual sofabed upstairs they got it wedged and the only way to move it was to yank it out. This has caused a 6" deep scratch along one wall of the stairwell and a gaping whole of about 10" on the opposite side going through the plasterboard. I have taken some of the responsibility for not ensuring the item would go upstairs but it is so hard to estimate, even the delivery driver thought it should be ok.

I will just add we are living in a brand new house and have only lived there for about 6weeks.

So M&S have taken the sofabed away free of charge, they also offered me a discount on the sofabed as that was also damaged (no point taking that option as I can't get it into the room I need). I have since had to provide three building quotes to rectify the damage ranging from £55-£100.(it looks alot worse than £55 of damage) This in itself has been a task as we have just moved into a new area, we only know our immediate neighbour and cannot find a recommended builder.

M&S have now offered a refund of the Sofabed, £100 to cover the damage, plus we can keep anything left over and a £30 gift card.

I don't know whether this is enough, if I go with the £100 quote I am only left with a £30 gift card which I personally don't feel is enough. Over the last 12months I have also spent probably in the region of £5000 with M&S and consider myself a loyal customer, should this not count for something.

I would appreciate any constructive advice.

TIA.

So, you got 3 quotes and M&S have offered you the value of the highest quote even if the repair only costs £55.

M&S have refunded the sofa AND offered you £30 giftcard.

I would be overly happy with the service you have been offered :)
  • How bloomin greedy can you be? They pay for the damage, give you extra and a giftcard, and you want more? For a little scratch in the wall? Get a flamin' grip.

I think they have more than met their obligations and would be very happy with that result what more can you possibly want.

You have already stated you take some responsibility for not ensuring it would fit. M&S seem to have gone above and beyond here. Just because you have spent x amount over the years does not entitle you to more than they have offered. I must have spent thousands in Tesco in my lifetime but they dont give me a fanfare and roll out a red carpet when I arrive ;)

Take what you have been offered, thank them and next time measure everything!
  • Would agree with the above. They've paid costs, refunded the sofabed, and given you a little something in compensation. What result were you hoping for, and were those expectations reasonable?

Sorry, but I agree with everyone else. They refunded you for the sofa, paid for the damage caused and gave you a £30 giftcard for your trouble. That's more than enough. Personally I wouldn't have even expected the giftcard.
  • I also agree with what everyone else said.... what more do you want?
