The old grey one still works the same, it's just twice the size of the later versions. If you get it, upgrade the firmware from the Netgear website.

Whatever you get, make sure you encrypt it:

There is a V3 out now, looks the same as a 2.

i have heard that the v2 has got an improved chipset, compared with the v1

i will secure it as i did a scan on my psp and found an unsecure belkin 54g router and i was horrified at how easy it was to get on it
  • It's got a different chipset, and looks neater, but the original one is functionally the same. So you have to balance that against the price difference of newer vs older kit.

So, that fact my adaptor lists the data rate as being 54mbps, and not the maximum attainable 108mbps, is not in any way related to my signal strength? I thought that the data rate would drop alongside signal strength?

Your adaptor is reporting the standard maximum data rate of the 54Mbs 802.11g standard interface, not the actual true data rate. The DG834pn wireless router uses MIMO technology, consisting of multiple antennas which help to increase the effective wireless coverage and also proprietary Super G techniques which can increase the data throughput, when used with the manufacturers Super G adaptors. This claims to have a maximum data rate of up to 108Mbs and this is achieved by packet bursting or data compression, which reduces the inter-frame spacing of the 802.11g specification. The only way to prove the actual throughput, is by transferring large files of a know size and taking measurements to calculate the true data rate.

I merely took it as being a common sense derivation.

The fact that your router has a maximum data rate figure of 108Mbs and your adaptor is displaying 54Mbs with a signal strength of 50% is pure coincidence. Signal strength and data rate are not connected in the way that you have assumed.

A mobile phone will work just as effectively with only 10% signal strength but the data is still carried at the GSM spec data rate across the network.

you could add an outbound firewall rule on port 80, and set log to always, it will probably list ips rather than resolving to names though.

well you can block keywords in the url, see block sites in the router config screen.

or if you use the free trendmicro parental filters built into the latest firmware, they can log all sorts of stuff, but it is a bit of a faff to implement.

It will only block if in the url.., make sure the scheduling is turned on.

as a test, google for "online game", and it should block it.

is upnp enabled on the router, if so, turn it off, that might stop it.
