netgear dg834g

i am cosidering buying this router from amazon because of the free usb adapter
however, i noticed that they have put a picture of the silver version 1 router on the product description and on the other picture, it shows the back of the white v2 router, which is the one i want.

So has anyone ordered this router recenty and got the version 2 router, or the v1 router?

Think that's what it stands for.

Mine give me solid 54mbps transfer rate, and that's two floors up. :)
  • The old grey one still works the same, it's just twice the size of the later versions. If you get it, upgrade the firmware from the Netgear website.

Whatever you get, make sure you encrypt it:

There is a V3 out now, looks the same as a 2.

Thing is, there is a data transfer difference. The new MIMO router will give up to 108mbps, where the old one only gives 54.

May not seem important initially, but when you take into account the loss of signal over a wireless network due to the building construction etc, you may find you lose 50%.

I've lost 50% signal with mine, as it's over 2 floors, but I still manage to attain a data transfer rate of 54mbps, the maximum the older model can achieve theoretically.

I don't think that you understand the relationship between signal strength and data rate! The 108Mbs is the maximum theoretical data rate and your 50% signal strength has nothing to do with this data rate.
 Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:
  • The theoretical maximum won't speed up peoples websurfing which is limited to around 8Mbps.

    Suspicious aren't you?

I merely googled the product and that was the hit I got on it, via froogle.

    Apologies for being helpful.

So, that fact my adaptor lists the data rate as being 54mbps, and not the maximum attainable 108mbps, is not in any way related to my signal strength? I thought that the data rate would drop alongside signal strength?

I merely took it as being a common sense derivation.

Pretty sure I didn't say that anywhere in my post, nor infer?;)
