O2 and equifax advice please

Options
I contacted O2 on Saturday to set up my home phone line rental as I already have mobile and broadband with them and the deal is good.
I will be moving from a BT contract.
I was told a credit check would need to be done through Equifax but this came back as declined.
I was advised to do a free credit check which I did and nothing is obvious on it. I do have debts (who doesn't) but they are all set up as DD's and paid on time.
I have lived at the same address for 27 years and nothing has changed in bank or personal details.
I then spoke to Equifax rep this morning to cancel the report as I didn't want to pay the monthly charge. The gent was very helpful and said that O2 had not asked them for a credit check as there was no request against my file. The last previous check was done 3 months ago for a car loan which I got and am paying by DD.
I then spoke again to O2 who did another credit check with Equifax they said which came back as declined.
Any advice please as I really want to get this sorted.

Equifax and the other CRAs don't actually "decline" anything, they supply information to companies (O2 in this example) and those companies make a decision based on their own lending criteria.

I would imagine you have fallen foul of the O2 internal systems. I would order a credit report form the three major CRAs and see if there's anything obvious. The only thing I could imagine is you have too much lending already.

    Hope you figure it out.

Do you live in a flat or a property that has more than one iteration of it's address?

From the sounds of things, O2 have performed a credit check against a spelling of your address other than what Equifax believe it to be.

Ergo, O2 will have brought up a null credit file and declined you due to no trace of you living at the supplied address, and Equifax won't see the search when you spoke to them as it wasn't carried out on the spelling of the address Equifax have on file for you.

Either this, or you have fallen foul of their "basic" criteria and been super declined without a credit search, but unless your single, unemployed, with no income and 10 dependants it's unlikely.

Seems the former is the case if Equifax definitely can't see a record of O2's search. Is it definitely Equifax that you checked your credit file with and not Experian?

Thank you both for the replies.
I am really annoyed about this just because O2 say they have run a check and Equifax state they haven't received a request from O2!
I am waiting now for a follow up call from O2 credit file referrals who I hope will explain what is going on.
Will take the advice about doing other checks and also have viewed the post on the link.

    Izools......................Thank you.

No I have lived in this house for 27+ years.
O2 provide my mobile and broadband so address should be on file correctly but I will ask the question once they return my calls.
O2 said they used Equifax in their 1st call to them.
As for being unemployed etc, no I am in full time employment and have been with the same company for 22 years.

Sounds like a system error on O2's side then. Any adverse information on your Equifax credit file atall?

No... none that I can see at all. I will ask them to check they used the correct address when they phone me back.

  • This sounds like a common problem with O2 - they check the address you give against the billing address for your bank account (nothing to do with credit checks), and decline you if they're not exactly the same.

    See here: https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/2542139

They refused me too, as the version of my address they hold doesn't have the flat number, and they claim they have no way to manually edit the address. Useless.

My dad had the same problem. We're with O2 for broadband and wanted to move to them for the phone too, but when applying online it said his credit rating wasn't good enough. We checked the Equifax report and there was nothing wrong there, just the mortgage and a credit card which hasn't been used for years.

I think it's something to do with the address. When we checked there was no sign of O2 having checked the report. I've noticed on my mobile phone bill that my address is listed as '1-1-127', which is a strange way of writing my address 'Flat 1/1, 127' - maybe that's the problem.
