Getting a decent laptop cooler can work wonders for old machines grinding to a halt with dust you can't get at inside -cost <£20. Failing that using one of these (the other way up) is widely reported to get you 80% of the way there but does look a litttle more odd and can lead to complaints from the kitchen around dinner time :p

I've ticked the various ones in the HiJack This log and pressed fix -which then 'removes' them but it doesn't ask me to reboot and when I scan again, they are still there - am I doing it right?
Just doing the MBAM scan now.

How can I check what ram I've got?
I tell you I am such a novice!!

I'm looking into a cooling pad or an upside kitchen tray to stop the overheating.
The battery is very low also - even after beng on charge until its fully charged - it then only has 1hour at 100%, so I think I'll have to get a new battery.

Is there anything else I can do? I've gone through the control panel and got rid of some more rubbish.
    Thanks

reinstall windows and switch from mse to avast.

laptop coolers, registry cleaners, defrags won't fix it.

Vista with only one gb of ram will run like a dog no matter what you do. Add another gb and it'll be like a new machine.

Re: addng another GB of Ram - is that easy to do, could I do it myself or would I need to go to a lappy repair shop?

I'll need the CD to reinstall windows won't I? I'll have to see if I can find it!! I've used Avast before but then got McAfee for free when I joined with Sky broadband and then added MSE when the free year ran out.

Was is fast when you had avast, if so, try it again.

mcafee and mse are bloated, depending on the model you probably have a factory restore partition, if so, it takes a few keypresses and about 10-15 minutes (after you have backed up your data)

    what make/model is it?

It sounds like you have a serious dust issue blocking your cooling system, I highly recommend getting it cleaned. If we can have make/model, it's possible it could be an easy DIY job.

For memory, go to crucial.com/uk they have videos and a freephone number for self-installation.

(oh, and bear in mind your 1Gb of memory might be 2 sticks of 512mb, which means you'll need to buy 2x 1Gb - laptops only have 2 memory slots - use the scanner at crucial to find out what you have inside already)
