Computer keeps freezing - Updated with log

IMO, when a problem post goes to more than one page with lots of "try this" advice, its quicker and less stressful/frustrating all-round to just grab essential files to a usb disk, and do a format and re-install of the OS.

Turn off all non-essential programs from the startup, and then copy your files to usb - a few at a time over a few re-boots if necessary

You could be there forever messing about with it otherwise

Hi all, and thanks for all your assistance.

I tried the Combofix. It took me about an hour and a half of trying to download it, then when I did, the computer just kept crashing every time I ran a scan (must have tried about 10 times). I eventually gave up, and this evening I have done a full factory settings system restore. So far it seems to have worked and the computer is running fine.

I have installed Microsoft Security Essentials as my anti virus and hopefully it will perform better than Avira did.

Sorry to appear sceptical, but modern hard drives are junk - I swap them out after failing within weeks/months, let alone years.

Has anyone suggested running CHKDSK yet?

Safe Mode > Start > Computer

Rightclick on C: > Properties > Tools > Error-Checking > Check Now

Tick both boxes, reboot.
