No, sorry, the original malwarebytes scan (quick scan) I did in safe mode. After your post I ran a full scan in normal mode which froze. I have not yet had time to try the full scan in safe mode.

It gets worse - several weeks ago my contact list from my hotmail account was hijacked and those on it started getting spam emails claiming to be from me for viagra etc!!! I was not overly worried at the time, as I only used that hotmail account as a 'disposable' account and my contact list was mainly shops email addresses etc. I also thought (rightly or wrongly) that as 'they' already had my contact list, there would not be much point in closing that account as 'they' would still have my contact list.

Just now however, I tried to log into my yahoo email account which is my main one I use all the time, and it stated that suspicious activity had been noted on it and it was believed to have been compromised and so suggested I change my password, which I have.

Where do I go from here?

Tried a full scan in safe mode and it just crashed (blue screen - it didn't stay up long enough to read, but something about crash dump etc).

Did you miss telling us the full model details? Have you created the Recovery discs?

    Hi, sorry, it's a Toshiba Pro P300-18O

and no, I never made any recovery discs, although when I first switch on, it still comes up with the window giving me the option of a full system recovery.

So we know you have enough RAM.

    Key Features
    - Intel® Pentium® Dual-Core Processor
    - Genuine Windows® Vista® Home Premium
    - DVD-RW SuperMulti drive (Double Layer)
    - 2048 MB (1024+ 1024) DDR RAM (667MHz)
    - 17" Widescreen TruBrite® XGA+ (1440 x 900) High Brightness display

Do you have a back up of all of your relevant information in the event that you run a factory restore?

Why on earth don't people make their Recovery Discs??

Hi, the recovery discs are one of those things I thought, 'I must get round to doing that'! but never did.

The only important files I have are my photos, I have most copied onto my wifes computer, and can easily make a disc of rest, or copy them to her computer.

If I were to try a 'repair my computer' from boot up, do I risk knackering the whole thing if it freezes or crashes half way through the process (and if not, and it works, would this fix things, or would the viruses or whatever the problem is, still be there?

Is there anything else I can do before going down this route?

    Thanks,

    Olias

Hi, sorry to bump this again, but probs are not going away. Comp is freezing nearly every time I use it and crashing regularly. I'm not convinced it's a hard disc failure as the laptop is less than two years old. I really think it's virus related. If anyone can suggest anthing for me to do then I would be grateful. Preferably not something that involves lengthy scans as it often freezes or crashes before the scan can complete (I'm referring to scans that take an hour plus)

    Any help gratefully recieved, ta.

    Please run COMBOFIX
    http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
    Shut down your anti virus
Follow the simple instructions it gives
Post the COMPLETE log it creates here (Split into sections if need be) ~ if there are loads of 'SNAPSHOT' pages then leave them out

If it comes up with a RENAMING error then RIGHT click the exe file and RENAME and call it QWERTY (Making the complete file name 'QWERTY.exe') Or SAVE as 'QWERTY' on download
(If no log comes up or you lose it, COMBOFIX.TXT can be found in C drive)

highly unlikely to be this, but try it without the battery in.

Backup your data, and restore to factory settings.
