My DH would let his clothes fall off him in rags if I didn't shop for them.

I buy him those smart casual sort of stuff. Got him out of trainers, told him he was too old in his 40s to wear them if not doing sport.
Timberland casual shoes in place of trainers with jeans & Timberland lace up shoes for smarter wear. He has loads of shirts his favs are lacoste & fred perry & YSL & ben sherman for workwear (they do very reasonable plain oxford style ones). Fred perry for polo shirts for summer day times on holiday & when not working. A few nice jumpers YSL are favs, but same brands as shirts.
He wears shirts most days, casual open necked ones, t-shirts are just for bed & gardening & under jumpers.
Jeans, gap are great for men, & levis too. Sadly he can only fit in his M&S ones & needs to shift the gut to get back into his "designer" jeans.

OH God! I've found sisters in a similar plight!

Now, admittedly there's a slight (20 year) age gap, but my OH insists on wearing clothing he bought before I was born. I find this more than a little twisted.

My first major win was his underwear. Ghastly, ghastly stuff it was when we first started seeing each other. Tighty washed-outies (not white, various shades of dark grey). The trouble I had getting him to even consent to test-drive a pair of trunks!

Little by little I've vetoed certain items: a sheepskin coat, a hideous pair of Clarks shoes (yes, they may be comfortable, but I wont hold your hand if you insist on wearing them outside), some more extreme relics of ages gone by (no, pencil ties will NEVER be 'in' again in this house!)

He scrubs up well enough in a suit, I'll give him that much. But his work "uniform" drives me potty. He's management. Yet he persists in dressing in drab, seen better days dark shaded trousers, shirts I'm now struggling to keep together at collar and cuff, and a dark ROUND-neck jumper - these constantly develop underarm holes. I've invested in a darning mushroom. One day the tumble-dryer will "eat" his self-inflicted uniform.

My other pet peeve is that he tucks his perfectly cool band t shirts INTO his perfectly cool Levis, thereby utterly ruining the look.

I don't care about the branding, he owns more designer stuff than me (me 0), I just want him to look smart and well turned out. You don't need some other dude's name sewed into your shirt for that. Just a little pride in your appearance!

Incidentally, I'm another one nagged constantly for the short-skirt-high-heels combo. Its not practical in my job, I wear a trouser suit. What is it with men and having your legs on show???

    Men!

  • I'm interesed in fashion, my oh isn't. I think with a lot of men it comes with not being confident and not knowing what will suit them. Don't forget unlike women clothes shopping is not their idea of fun! I would try and find a compromise somewhere, my oh will never be trend led and tbh I don't care now, he looks after himself and is clean and smart. Try and find out who's dress sense he admires in the same age bracket as himself and try and work with that but it has to be stuff that he likes or feels comfortable in otherwise he won't wear it. I have pretty much given up on trying to mould my oh now and he has pretty much given up trying to make me wear the pretty 'Laura Ashley' style dresses that he thinks would suit me!!

Look on the bright side... My ex always wore farrahs with a shirt and tie for work and jeans or tracky bottoms and a baggy top at home. and for the pub etc. We were together for over 10 years. Since we split up (which, incidentally was over 10 years ago too) he has taken to wearing the same for work and tracky bottoms and a baggy top all the rest of the time (according to my girlies) They are well sick of him being a slob.
