  • My experience of the COMETclearance website has been mixed. Basicly if you have a problem they seem to try to help although I found that for missing parts, contacting the manufacturers directly was far faster and more effective. Comet supply you with completely the wrong bits 2 months later I got 3 grillpans from them one with a fixed handle, god only knows where they found it !!! it certainly wasn't a Whirlpool product. On discovering missing parts I phoned both COMET and Whirlpool. The proper Pans and rack arrived from Whirlpool 4 days later.!!
If a fault arrises on aCLEARANCE item, when you finally talk to their sort out team having done the compulsory 6 calls to customer disservice with promises of return calls etc., you discover that it should be renamed Trotters Independant Traders Auction Site and they have merged with Arthur Daley Enterprises. They inform you that you have no rights as it is their auction site small print terms which apply mostly telling you you got it cheap what do you expect scum. !!!! (BASICALLY YOU DIDN'T PAY FULL PRICE SO BUYER BEWARE)
  • To Jack 50 ---- Comet are not lying in this instance. If you really want an item enter the top price you are prepared to pay. The site shows the increments the bids increase by e.g. £30, so if I have entered that my top bid is £500, 10 minutes before close top bid is mine at £200 you wait until 1 minute before and bid £230 the site will up my bid to £260 and I win.
  • Comet auctions are now refusing to repair any under warranty items which are 'frost damaged'.

This will affect a huge number of customers. They refuse to supply the warranty conditions, and just keep saying that if any product is kept in non frost free conditions then it is not domestic use - but refuse to provide any paperwork which shows the basis of this assertion or that you the customer were aware of it.

Our washing machine has suffered damage due to frost, it is 4 months old, they are refusing to repair it and quoting a repair cost of more than the machine cost.

Been round the houses with customer non services department - will never buy from them again.

Have you checked the washing machine's manual (and the warranty documentation) to see if it says anything about draining it if it's being left on an environment where it may reach sub-zero temperatures.

If it does not you might have a case in the small claims court - you would need to contact a CAB for some advice.

It's not unreasonable for something with pipes that may contain water to suffer damage if subjected to sub-zero temperatures but I would have thought it incumbent on the supplier to ensure that the customer is aware of that fact as it's not unreasonable to site a washing machine in an area where temperatures may drop below zero, particularly if you are away for an extended period.
There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.
  • Hi madinternetuser,

My name’s Matt and I’m from Comet.

I was concerned to learn of the problems that you are experiencing with your Beko cooker, and that the issue has not been resolved despite your previous telephone conversation.

As I would like to take ownership of this matter and investigate further, please could you send me an e-mail using the link below, which includes your purchase details. You will need to register a few details with us in order to be able to send your e-mail in.

    Thanks

    Hi matt!

I was an avoid user of comets' clearance auctions, but after reading this Its definitely best I avoid for the forseeable future. I've also had errors with bids, where on several occasions I've bidded higher than the winning bid in the time scale, and then told I was not the winning bidder but someone else was...
When I recieve replies they are vile and automated, just blatantly stating its a mistake on my behalf, end of....

It is quite a normal practice with Large retailers and supermarkets to opt out of having manufacturers warranties with a lot of the goods they sell. That is why they can offer them at such cheap prices.

I used to work for asda years ago on the elctrical dept and all our goods used to be delivered by HI way express. All the products were non warrantied and if people used to bring the back we either used to swap them or send the off to repaier at a local repair agent.

If they were swapped over, at the end of every month we used to do a write off sheet and all the damaged/faulty goods used to go in the skip. Used to have great fun smashing the front of TV's in, hammering away at a kettle etc, sothey couldnt be taken out of the skip and repaired/ used etc. Couldnt give them to charity due to the safety issue.
As far as I am aware, this practice still goes on, my brother works for them and he i Think still does it.

Because of this, I think you have no recourse over the manufacturer, as the store has taken all responsibility away from them.
  • This is a WARNING to all customers who hope to grab a baragain on THE COMET CLEARANCE Auction site.
My experience of the Comet clearance website is that it is setup to ensure that the company gets the price they want. this price is pre determined by the managers.
Its not an auction at all but designed to feel like one......
It basically ensures a that punters pay the amountsthat COMET require for each item which is usually quite high.
    Therfore no bargains....so sorry.
I firmly believe they prevent people from buying items if they have not reached the price they want for each of them, which is usually not a lot less than their normal shop price, and which fails to properly reflect the damage to the item or the fact the item is effectively 2nd-hand (returned by the customer). I stopped using the site ages ago - a waste of time.

Any proof of this allegation of fake auctions / auction rigging ?

    WARNING - COMET CLEARANCE AUCTION

Beware on Comet auctions. I have tried this site but never won an auction with a reasonable offer.
For the sake of all customers out there, I bid on items and watch the auction until there was only 2 minutes left then I stay on the site refreshing every few seconds so that I would not be outbid. Unfortunately, unless you meet the required amount that they have preset you will not win the bid. Therefore no one gets a bargain. On the whole Comet has treated me very badly and actually this is how customers in general are being treated. They do not care as long as they get their money. …………and as soon as I mention that I believed they had hidden reserves on their items they closed my enquiry and refused to answer any more e-mails.
My firm belief is that comet put hidden reserves and people who use the site have no chance of winning if the reserve is not met.

Kindly refrain from using the COMET auction site as you will not get a bargain…..!!
