  • Beware on Comet auctions. I have tried this site but never won and auction so I decided to try my best to win one. I bid on a washing machine and watched the auction until there was only 15 minutes left then I stay on the site refreshing every few seconds so that I would not be outbid. When the timer reached Zero I was the winning bidder but imagine astonishment when I recieved an e-mail stating that I had lost.I contacted comet to find out how this happened and was given a standard reply to the effect that someone had put a proxy bid in earlier in the auction that had beaten mine.I went back to the site to check and found that the winning bidder had only made one bid. When I contacted comet to ask how this person had made his bid in what must have been a nanosecond they did not answer.I contacted them again after four days to ask why they had not replied they told me that they had no such enquiry on their system. I went on my account and there was my original enquiry so I gave them the enquiry number and they still said that no such enquiry existed.Imagine my suprise (again) when I went back to the site to check my account only to find that the original enquiry was not there. Another message to comet got the reply that I must have misunderstood how to bid and that had I listen to them in the first place I would have understood what had happened. On the whole comet have treated me like a moron and as soon as I mention that I believed they had hidden reserves on their items they closed my enquiry and refused to answer any more e-mails.
My firm belief is that comet put hidden reseves and people who use the site have no chance of winning if the reserve is not met.

I looked at these auctions last year and was bemused to see a washing machine with a large dent in its side go for the same price as a new one in the store.

As with all auctions, decide what you consider is a fair price, and don't bid more than this.

Yes i agree when you look at the item have a final price in mind and if it goes past it stop bidding as most of the time there will be another soon after.

Comet Suck!! once they have your money they dont give a dam.
However I hope they sort this for you as being without a cooker must be hell.
  • update : just had someone on the phone from the manager directors office he now tells me that the parts are gonna take 7 to 14 days to get to me. Totally amazing that a group the size of comet dont stock parts , when i argued with him he just said well if dont like it we will give a refund , when i asked about some compensation he replyed no these things happen

You may also find, even if you buy instore and not on the auctions, that Comet 'buy-out' the manufacturers warranty in the first year. So, instead of dealing with the people with most experience of the product, you are left to deal with the Comet Aftersales Division.
For myself I am an optimist - there does not seem to be much use being anything else.

  • My experience of the Comet clearance website is the same as Jack50; I believe they prevent people from buying items if they have not reached the price they want for each of them, which is usually not a lot less than their normal shop price, and which fails to properly reflect the damage to the item or the fact the item is effectively 2nd-hand (returned by the customer). I stopped using the site ages ago - a waste of time.
