every htc desire owner needs to read this link. this will be useful for anyone with a lithium ion battery device and not just for the htc desire. http://myhtcdesire.com/tipstweaks/tips-everything-you-wanted-to-know-about-li-ion-batteries-but-were-afraid-to-ask

i found the tips useful. battery life is very dependent on the signal strength and if you live or use the phone in a weak signal area (i mean the raw signal strength in dbm and asu and not the !!!!!! bars shown on most phones) then more battery power will be used up. same if you use more video or some apps that keep the phone always active.

hope some find the link useful. battery times improve with use and following what it says on the link.

widgets that are active all the time like news and weather synching all the time, facebook, music etc take up more power, using a shotcut or the program icon on your home screen rather than a widget if you want more duration from the power in the battery. the cell antenna power boosting will be taking most of the power so if you live in a weak signal area more power is consumed to boost the signal and hence lower times.

if some apps are running all the time and keeping the phone awake then more CPU cycles will be taking place consuming more power. when idling the cpu is something like 245MHz and when busy it goes up to 998.4MHz on froyo update. so pretty efficient processor cycle adjustments depending on need. but if an app keeps using the processor all the time then you lose more power because of higher utilisation of the CPU i think. but CPU consumes less power compared to the antenna signal boosting and screen etc. read the link i gave earlier in the thread and see what uses more power on the graph given on the link. also see what your time without signal is (you can find that number somewhere in one of the menus, if it is a huge percentage then your battery will run out in less than half a day like happens to me when i work in a poor signal area even if i dont use the phone all day, otherwise can last me more than 48h easily even when i use the phone.

also see what your awake time is compared to the up time and if more than 20% -40% (depending on how you use your phone obviously) begin to wonder what app is doing the wrong things and uninstal that app.

to see if it is a faulty battery, see some hardware and software numbers by using apps like "quick system info pro" or "android system info" both are free apps. see what the battery voltage is after a full charge and one can know if it is faulty if the voltage is low. it shows loads of other information like CPU info etc. my CPU runs at 9-45% usually and more only when doing many things. with these apps see what processes are consuming more of cpu, most apps even if open will be consuming zero percent of the cpu unless they are actually doing something and hence wont be consuming power. most task killers just shut down such apps and i dont think they save much power and just one more app wasting power and you can shut down the wrong things and cause problems for your phone. in my phone some 40 apps are running and only 2 0r 3 are consuming CPU at the moment so no need for task killers. most task killers just show what task is open and not how much power they consume and shut down everything even if no need to. anyone doubting me just instal the apps i mentioned and see what processes are running and see how much cpu they are using so that you can see for yourself what i mean.

follow what is advised in the link i gave in an earlier post on this thread and you will see an improvement. i used to charge a couple of times a day and always carried my charger but no longer and i dont use a task killer and get decent times depending on the signal strength obviously. that is the single biggest drain on battery.

    Hi

I got my new phone on Wednesday but yesterday the battery only lasted 10 hours, (I hadn't switched off 3g which I now have) but today it only lasted the same lentgh of time and I've hardly used it, is there anything I can do?

I have gone into the settings to find out the percentage of use and android system 94%, cell standby 2%, wifi 2% and phone idle 2%
Any ideas, as if not I am considering sending back :(

    THanks

Unfortunately if you got it recently its probably embedded with Vodafone's malware.

Thats the 360 apps that start automatically and cant be shut down or uninstalled.

On top of using your battery up they also use up your data allowance as they sync constantly and wont use wi fi.

People are going mad about it.

The Desire is a great phone but if you can get out of your contract with Vodafone now I would do so.

The mods keep deleting and merging threads but this one is over 60 pages.

after seeing all those vodafone threads here and elsewhere i wonder why anyone with a smartphone would even consider vodafone after the recent debacles at vodafone for such customers. surely a majority of those !!!!ed off customers wont renew their vodafone contracts. vodafone is digging a hole where they will slowly but surely fall in. making apps to forcibly use up your data with no way for you to stop it, bloody scoundrels. a bit like you buy a landline and it keep calling 0900 numbers without your consent all the time for the telephone company to make a quick buck.

Especially when they pulled the "unlimited/fair usage policy" and replaced it with a hard cap very recently.

I'm glad i kicked up enough of a stink that they offered to cancel my contract.
