It is always a good idea to know your postage rates when you list as it saves a great deal of time and effort. There are only 2 overseas rates for RM, so it isn't difficult to add those rates to the postal box when you list an item, then the invoice does pick up the correct postage rate. This only works though if you list it with the postage shown but it makes overseas selling very very easy.

Thank you. Could you link me to the 2 RM overseas rates. :)

I was a little surprised to have an overseas potential bidder.

I have checked RM and found a price. It also offers international signed for an additional cost. Would you recommend using this?

Depends on what you are selling as to whether you offer Int'l signed for. If its a fairly inexpensive item I wouldn't bother. Apart from anything else you'd have to charge for it and people would be reluctant to pay an extra £4.25 (don't forget this is on top of the normal postage).

Also it only tracks whilst it is in the UK.

I only sell items up to £41 overseas so don't use any tracking just tsandard airmail.

For RM prices I use this:

    http://sg.royalmail.com/portal/rm/PriceFinder;jsessionid=RTQOHQJCGXXHAFB2IGLENZQ;jsessionid=RTQOHQJCGXXHAFB2IGLENZQ?catId=23500532&gear=pricingcalc

I check one European price and one other (US for instance) and those are the onlyl 2 postal rates i need as it covers everything.

    Here is the postage calculator

    http://sg.royalmail.com/portal/rm/PriceFinder?catId=23500532&gear=pricingcalc

or pick up a leaflet in the PO with postal prices. Don't forget to add the packaging weight which can make a lot of difference.

A lot of people only offer international on cheaper items likely to sell for under 41 pounds so they are insured with a certificate of posting.

There can be a lot of interest internationally from countries which have good exchange rates against the pound.

Edit: Soolin types faster than me!

    !

Absolutely, in most weeks I sell more overseas than I do in the UK, in fact it is why I can't make powerseller status as my overseas sales don't count (you can tell this is becoming an obsession of mine can't you!)

I have a stock of customs forms, airmail stickers and use paypal postage to print off my non UK postage.

Just as an aside. I had an email in the week telling me that ROI was added to 'domestic sales'. How relevant this is for soolin I don't know? Did they mean to send the email to her?

I didn't get that email...I may not talk to you again :rotfl:

However I don't sell a great deal to the ROI, my best selling countries are currently Australia, the new European ones and for some strange reason Finland.

Hope you don't mind me asking but I have been tussling with overseas postage costs and exclusions and have found this thread so useful. What countries would folks never ever post to, apart from Italy.

Would the normal for clothing items be airmail small packets and what if something weighed about 2kg, what would be the best there, something like DHL?

    thanks from the newbie seller

Firstly if it is likely to get complicated then I don't offer the item overseas, and that includes very heavy items. I don't 'do' couriers as i am not here all day to wait for them.

I sell to Europe excluding italy, North America (Canada and the US), Australia and Japan. Sometimes i open the listings further to South America but that's about it.
