  • Interesting thread.

I would be lost without the internet, mobile phone and the car but as all are essential for work and partially subsidised I don't consider them luxuries and would be financially worse off without them as I couldn't do my job.

I cut right back on Sky but didn't give it up entirely - partly because the reception where we live is lousy - can't get C5 or freeview without a new aerial. So I have the entertainment channels for Living TV which is my little luxury @ £7.50 per month. I could do without it however so my vote for "essential luxury" goes to having my hair cut and colour done professionally. I have reduced the number of visits per year and stopped the manicure that I used to have done at the same time but I wouldn't want to leave the house if my hair was dreadful - and then how would I work??

I haven't mentioned family and friends because I don't consider them to be luxuries - they are the reason for living.

  • Nathaniel instantly said decent loo roll as well LOL! I'd definitely have to add Radio 4 to my list, but I kind of lump that in with the computer as that's how I listen to it. We get naff all reception of any kind here - TV, radio, mobile phone - so the computer is a lifeline. Sounds like we live on a minute island in the North Atlantic! Actually mobile phone reception there would probably be great...

  • Along with a few other people on here,I would have to say the internet.

Up until about 4 years ago,I had absolutely no interest in computers,I am not very technical and when my DS suggested I get a PC,I wasn't very keen. However,I have taught myself to use it,much to my great surprise and now I am obsessed with the internet.

I do everything on there, banking, most of my shopping and keeping in touch with people,I love it.So much so that on the rare occasions that I go away for a few days,I can't wait to get home to go online again !

I don't drive,I have plenty of clothes,I rarely go out,I don't watch much TV,so the internet provides all the entertainment I need.Good grief, that makes me sound like a really sad nerd, hunched over my keyboard for hours at a time !
  • CAFCGIRL! I agree with you totally, its all about the Heinz Ketchup. I eat it with EVERYTHING! All the restaurants in my high street know me as ketchup girl because if they don't have ketchup, i'll bring my own. Not little sachets, i'll whip out a big squeezy bottle. I have no shame.

Life is like a ferrari - it goes too fast - but thats ok because I can't afford it anyway!
  • For me, along with decent loo roll, it is my car.

I don't use it very often and it cost me a lot in repairs last year, but I'm terrified of getting rid of it and losing my freedom! I'm sure I would learn to live without though. The MOT is due in May and if it is going to cost a lot to repair then it will have to go.
