I remember in the original thread we were discussing all the additives that are in gravy powder, including MSG. Well i've discovered a product called Goldenfry onion gravy powder and its delicious!!
As far as I can see its fairly safe, the ingredients are:
Wheat flour, cornstarch, salt, colour (ammonia caramel) dried onion and beef stock. The best bit is though its far cheaper than the stuff we've been buying thats additive free, its only about 50p a tub!
I use it as a gravy browning by using my meat juices and then adding the onion gravy at the end for colour and thickening.
I've only found it for sale in Morrisons at the moment, but its worth a go if you are concerned about MSG etc.

Thanks, I'll give it a try, I use Bisto at the moment but I do like my gravy thick and a lot of it.0

I have a feeling that iceland use to do the granules of golden fry.
But not sure what the additives are in it though.

Hi
The only problem is the colour which is E150c and is recommended to be avoided by Hyperactive children's support group and has questions marks over blood pressure. It is widely used though0 -
what is wrong with the old fashioned method of gravy making? my kids wont eat anything else! just add a bit of flour to the meat fat, gradualy add the veg juices or water/stock and bring to boil till thick, i add a bit of gravy browning if i want it darker, some wine or herbs for flavour, it costs little and tastes greatMember 1145 Sealed Pot Challenge No4

I also make gravy this way, but sometimes if we have something such a pie and chips, it's difficult to make hm gravy (i know i should freeze some proper meat gravy for these occasions!!)
I don't particularly like using Bisto: here's why:
Maltodextrin (just a commercial thickener and filler)
Hydrogenated vegetable oil

I have yet to find something along the same lines which is additive freeHi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
I use the Goldenfry ones. They come in 4 different varieties which are vegetable, onion, beef and chicken and you can buy them in Iceland. Sometimes they have a BOGOF offer on of them so I stock up then.2008 Comping ChallengeWon so far - £3010 Needed - £230Debt free since Oct 20040

When I used to use gravy powder, this was the only one I used - which became a real problem because it was hard to find. As I moved to various parts of the country, I found myself bulk buying it whenever I did see it
However, thanks to this board and the gravy thread (was that one of mine? I forget) I now make lovely HM gravy every time.

Patchwork Cat, is the E150c actually in the goldenfry one? It just says ammonia caramel so I assumed that was safe?
I usually make my own gravy as well, however, when you are just making something like bangers and mash its great to have as a standby. Theres no way I would have gravy left to freeze in this house!
I cant find proper gravy browning so I usually add an onion that will blacken for colouring.
I'd like to find out more about the colouring thing though, I really thought this one was ok. Its difficult to feed the kids healthy food!0 -

I just saw some in ASDA - I think it may have been by Cross and Blackwell?

I use Comptons Gravy Salt for browning and seasoning. I used to always use Burdall's Gravy Salt but they stopped making it and Comptons is the only one you can get now. It really makes a huge difference and is nice IMHO than the gravy browning. It is just really concentrated caramel with salt I think.Jane
