Although as we're in the height of apple season, you should be able to use apples instead.
You can make your own pectin and now is the time to do it. I reckon you could even freeze it for future use :jWarning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac0 -
I'm sure they sell them in Poundland too.2008 Comping ChallengeWon so far - £3010 Needed - £230Debt free since Oct 20040

For pies i just use the foil dishes you can buy in Wilko 10 for 99p.
They can also be used to make sandwich cakes if you want to do a bulk bake.
A 6egg victoria sandwich recipie makes 3 x 6" Sandwich cakes. Just grease, flour and line the bottom with parchment.
Throw them away after use, or i put them in the dish washer and use them again.
Whatever tin you use homemade pies really are the best!!0 -
its funny cos yesterday i was trying to buy a pie for my DH & DS cos they dont eat liver (which is what i was doing for tea)
but I couldnt buy a decent family size pie??? in the end tried new gingster steak n mushroom deep fill ones (individual size) - they said they were ok but like most shop bought - there's never enough filling is there!
The best ones i have found so far shop bought is Mcdougalls ones, and i only get them when they are on BOGOF!!!!
I hate to admit that i have never made a pie, but am seriously thinking about it now! but does making yr own really work out cheaper - meat is getting so expensive nowadays isnt it?
moggins - i have a Mason Cash mixing bowl i picked up from a charity shop - I absolutely love it!! reminds me of my school days, but it really is the best bowl for getting everything in it!0 -

My enamel pie dish saw action during the second world war serving in the Apple and Rhubarb Fussiliers LOL and it is still going strong.
I made a pie the other week cos we had people coming for Sunday lunch and they couldn't believe that A: I could make a pie and B: that I had bothered to decorate the top with fruit and leaves cut from the left over pastry. My grandmother always did this do any other OS'rs do it? A pie is just naked without IMO LOL
If I'm mass-baking and freezing I cut pastry letters out to put on the top to spell what the filling is ie: Mince, apple, blackberry, freezer lables are ok but you can't eat them:rotfl:Life's a beach! Take your shoes off and feel the sand between your toes.0 -
I like writing words on my pies too, usually it's just people's names for individual ones - kids love that, but it's fun to write rude things too
Traditionally it was savoury pies that were decorated and not sweet pies- not sure why. I'm with MATH though- decorate the lot.0 -
Oh yes - a pie has to have leaves or other suitable shapes on the top.
Mind you, what leaves have to do with steak and kidney, I don't know!!0 -
Because i make pies for our Farmers Market i have to decorate the tops so i know which ones they are when they come out of the oven. I do them the same every time, then if the labels ever fall off i can tell at a glance whats inside .
Ticklemouse. I don't do steak & kidney, but i do steak & ale, the edges are crimped and large ones have 4 daisy shapes on and the small ones 2.
If i'm trying to get round DH i make him one with hearts on.... sad aren't I?0 -
My favourite pasty shop has different patterns of pastry on the top so they know which pasties are which......and thriftlady - writing rude things :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:0
