I'm slowly getting this... but have trouble finding good odds for an SNR!

Check Correct Score and Half Time/Full Time markets. You'll be looking forever if you're just betting on who will win the match :)

  • Thanks very much - I really appreciate the help and am starting to understand a bit more -

So as I understand it now -

    (1) To act as "bookie" (lay a bet) I would have to use a betting exchange such as Betfair. Are there other betting exchanges or does everyone stick to Betfair ?

    (2) To act as "punter" (back a bet) I would go to any of the other sites which I could find -if possible through Quidco etc - who are offering free bets and back a bet to match as closely as possible to the one I propose laying at the exchange.

Then comes the tricky bit - I've read the odds can change unexpectedly!

Will obviously try lots of "dry" runs before taking the plunge -I am riveted to this thread. It's a real challenge to get my head round it - thoroughly enjoying it -

You've got a really good grasp of it. :T

Betfair are a 'betting exchange' which means you can back and lay but for matched betting purposes you only want to use them to lay bets. :)

Other bookies, such as Coral, Blue Square only allow you to back bets!

Regarding question 2, yeah you look for odds as close as possible from your chosen bookie and betfair then you do the bets. When you say exactly the same outcome your right in saying that but as long as you 'lay' on that outcome at Betfair, not 'back'! :D

Yep Betfair is the 'constant' and the bookies we just use and then ditch ;)

    E.g.:

    Bookie #1: Coral - £50 free bet

Coral bet 1: Your own £50. Bet at Coral, lay at Betfair. Lose £1.
Coral bet 2: Free £50. Bet at Coral, lay at Betfair. Lose £1.

Overall profit from Coral: £48. Then move onto:

    Bookie #2: Totesport - £40 free bet

Totesport bet 1: Your own £40. Bet at Totesport, lay at Betfair. Lose 50p.
Totesport bet 2: Free £40. Bet at Totesport, lay at Betfair. Lose £1.50.

Overall profit from Totesport: £38. Total profit so far: £86. Then move onto another bookie, and another, and another - but keep using Betfair to lay each bet.

There are but most people stick to Betfair as it has more users which normally means better odds - and it's easier to keep all your money in one place.
    (2) To act as "punter" (back a bet) I would go to any of the other sites which I could find -if possible through Quidco etc - who are offering free bets and back a bet to match as closely as possible to the one I propose laying at the exchange.

You've got it! I normally have the bookie and Betfair windows both open together on screen to look for close odds.
Then comes the tricky bit - I've read the odds can change unexpectedly!

Not usually, unless you leave it quite close to kick-off. If you place your bet more than a few hours before the match starts, the odds are normally pretty stable.

We do have a whole board about this you know ;)

It's just that SS is an egomaniac who has to start his own mini-board

You've got it! Yeah always use Betfair! :D

As for odds changing unexpectadly you shoudl be ok. As daft as it sounds take your time placing the bets. Even if the odds do change you are less laible to mistakes! :)

Most of us are too scared to venture outside this board though! ;)

We are just one big happy family! :D:p
  • Ummm... potentially stupid question, but...

Surely there is a limit to what you can do, eventually you'll run out of bookmakers free offers? Or is there something I've missed? (Like the number of bookmakers offers there are.)
    FWLBM - 1st Sept 06 - Debts: around £80k (not entirely sure...:o )

It's probably possible to run out of bookies eventually but there are people who've been doing it a few years and made £20,000 or £30,000 without running out. There are a lot more online bookies than you'd think, and new ones start up every now and again. Plus, existing ones do offers for their existing customers.

I've made over £5,000 and still have a huge great long list of bookies left to do - my problem is finding the time to do it at the moment.
