I'll avoid their fuel stations altogether now because I was left looking like complete twonk when their stupid "pay at kiosk" button refused to work at Tesco in Stafford about 5 years ago.... After about 5 minutes trying to get some petrol I "calmly" placed the nozzle back to the pump, "calmly" got into my car, "calmly" exited the forecourt and "calmly" went elsewhere, never to return!!

I have avoided all supermarket fuel stations ever since the " dirty fuel " episode.

The truth about forecourt fuel dispensing pumps is that they operate under strict terms laid down by law and administered by Trading Standards Dept of the local authority.

The mechanism that governs the amount of fuel dispensed against that shown by the display is sealed by TS and woe betide a forecourt operator who has broken the seals without notifying the department. - The seals may have to be broken to effect a repair to the pump but TS will immediately visit after the repair to check the calibration and reseal the pump.

Forecourts are "spot checked" by the department without notice. The pumps are tested to a strict controlling set of parameters that ensures that the pump minutely over-delivers the displayed quantity. This is to allow for any wear and tear in the measuring mechanism in the period between spot checks that might reduce the quantity delivered.

It is not possible that any reputable company could long-term operate a forecourt and be short-changing its customers by not delivering the legally correct amount of fuel for the money shown on the display.
  • On a similar note, I've noticed that very often the £20 worth I put in the tank mysteriously becomes £20.01 when I get to the cashier, first time I thought it was my mistake but it happens far too often and I always check the amount before I go to pay, I actually had £10 become £10.02 at Charnock Richards Services on the M6, very anouying as motorways services are a rip off anyway.
I hate football and do wish people wouldn't keep talking about it like it's the most important thing in the world

Must be an asbolutely microscopic benefit.

This is a great website. But when "advice" is to fill up at night as the cool gets you more petrol in the tank, all credibility is lost.

This is perfectly true, I have worked at 4 different forecourts over the years and Trading Standards pop in to check the measuring of the pumps. Any complaints and they will come and recheck it as well. It is all done very accuratly and I imagine it is almost impossible for the operator to be charging incorrect prices compared to that dispensed. Everything is very closely monitored in the customers favour in my experience. Ok so the 119.9 is expensive, but it always is if you need to buy it isn't it?!

By all means complain to Tesco in writing to their head office. But if I'd of complained to the cashier at the forecourt I would of felt like a right tool. They are there to take the money, not work out if the ml's are correct.

When things are only a few pennies being ripped off, I won't car.

You must be looking or wanting/needing something to moan about.

I recommend if your not happy to write a letter to Tesco head office and see where that gets you, either way the stamp will cost you more ;)
