Returning an unused item that never actually left the store...

Options
Hi Folks,
This is kind of odd. We're renovating a house and a couple of weeks ago I went into a light shop down the road and ordered the light fittings for it. I ordered 3 pendant lights (a bit like chandeliers) as they had only one in stock they gave me one and said they would order in two others. I paid in advance.
After the one light we had bought was hung I realised they were quite big and one of the places we were going to put the light fitting just isn't suitable.
When the lights arrived I went down to the shop today to collect one light and ask for a refund for the other as we can't take it. The assistant refused to give me a refund and then nearly refused to give me the one light I asked for. She insisted I needed to speak to the manager (who would be in tomorrow) and would need to show a receipt (bearing in mind here that they actually physically had my lights and still have an example in the shop). She seemed to think I would only be entitled to store credit for my return.
Surely that is boll0cks? The light I am trying to return has never left the shop, has never left its packaging, has never been installed and while I realise it was ordered in they are still actually selling the light so it's hardly a special order. I shouldn't even need a receipt frankly.
Just looking for reassurance really.
Thanks,
BatCat

You have no legal right to a refund.

Perhaps the reason they only had one in stock was because it wasn't a popular line and they would struggle to sell it. They ordered it specially for you so I don't think they're obliged to refund you unless it's faulty.

You are not entitled to a refund. You may however get one if you speak nicely to the manager

If there is nothing faulty about the goods then you are not even entitled to store credit let alone a refund, by offering you the credit, the store might feel it is being more than reasonable.

Sorry and good luck with the manager.

    Hi Folks,
But the item hasn't even left the shop?
They are still selling the light, as there is one hanging up there now with the same price I paid for it, it is just I took the last one they had in stock on that day.
Guess I will have to talk nicely the manager then.

    All of this is irrelevent.
You entered a contract to buy 3; you cant just change your mind because it suits you.

Really? Because that's happened to me quite frequently over the past little while. I ordered 2 radiators 3 weeks ago and the company who was supplying them told me they didn't actually have the ones I asked for in stock but would I mind taking some in a different colour. People are perfectly entitled to change their minds.
    Bizarre.

Legally you are not perfectly entitled to change your mind. Anything that is offered beyond your statutory rights is at the discretion of the retailer.

I don't know if B&Q still do it but you used to be able to take back any unopened wallpaper when you had finished your room.

They weren't obliged to take it back but it was good customer service. However because it is not a legal requirement, I always check they still do it when buying a new batch.

That's just your opinion though unfortunately, it makes no difference to the situation.

When you see the manager explain the situation to him/her and ask them for a refund.

Which company are we talking about?

Why does OP need a refund? She made a special order, shop got said item, then OP did not want it. Shee is not entitled to a refund just because OP changed their mind
