Er, who's this Ann Coats? :rotfl:
The IKEA is in Ashton, near the Snipe Pit Retail area where the B&Q Warehouse, Carpetworld? etc. are.

Ilva not ikea, and young Ann is my labourer, always send her up the ladder first:D
A thankyou is payment enough .
  • I drove past Ilva the other day. They put the brochure through my door yesterday and I thought that it was quite pricey. I don't have £400 to spend on a coffee table!

Have you had a look at the Antiques Village in Levenshulme? Its on the A6 and you can get nice furniture that isn't the same as everybody else's Ikea stuff.
  • No I haven't been there. I get a bit scared sometimes going near Levenshulme!!

I think most places have local treasure shops where if you make the effort to look you can find yourself a real unique bargain.

The trouble is that most of us fdon't have time to go to individual shops and want a one stop shop for everything and a nice website too.

Thanks for letting me know, if we're ever round that way I might give it a look.

Ikea Ashton is opening on 14th October - I heard its near the bus station/Wellington Way, and not near the Snipe Retail Park I hope it is not at the Snipe because I live right next to it and I will be too tempted to spend in there all the time!
My apologies I thought it was being built almost opposite the end of the Motorway slip road as it joins the Manchester Road, but it's futher down the Manchester road then up the A627, (off the roundabout on the bypass?)

I have writer's block - I can't begin to tell you about it.
You told me again you preferred handsome men but for me you would make an exception.

  • I went to Ilva in Thurrock the other weekend. It is not quite the same as IKEA other than maybe style.
The furniture looked to be of a much higher quality than IKEA's - it all felt solid & not like it would fall apart. Yes, it was more expensive but not outrageously so - eg sofas around £400 etc. Really nice dining tables, chairs etc - you could have all sorts of choices from a cheap white lacquered MDF table top, to proper oak or cherry or other wood at a higher price.
The store itself was very smart with lots & lots of sales assistants.
IKEA's market place is better for all the cheap accessories however.
My big problem with IKEA is that in the catalogue the furniture always looks quite nice, but when you see it in close up some of it looks really shoddy. I have some stuff from when IKEA first opened in the UK (vintage!) & you can really see how they have compromised on quality & materials since then in order to keep the price low.
I will be going back to Ilva but only when they open their planned store in Reading!
  • I got the brochure through the door soon after noticing it in lakeside. Seems they are trying to be rival to IKEA (you'd never guess that from the name) first page says things like "at ILVA u dont get herded round you are free to wander wherever u like"

  • Well I might go down for a look after all. Although to be honest all I'm probably after right now is accessories so I'll probably end up sticking with IKEA.

I just like the fact that I can buy something like a big church candle for about £0.40 and a children's toy box for £5.00, it just makes sense to me.
  • Well it looks like IKEA in Ashton is still due to open on 19th October 2006.

It looks far from finished though in my opinion.

I'm sure I'll be going for a nose around when it opens although I have to drive passed it on a weekly basis so I'm sure I can expect long delays!

    Hi

I happened upon ILVA online when searching for some furniture for my new home. I bought a walnut sideboard which was significantly cheaper than anywhere else - John Lewis, Dwell etc.

I completed the whole transaction from home - no painfully long drive and hour long wait at Ikea. The delivery was extremely efficient and they even called 30 mins before arrival and were on time too.

It was easy to build and I am delighted by the high quality and stylish finish. It is a significant improvement on anything I have ever bought from Ikea - which is a lot.

If you take your time there are some well priced pieces. I will be going back for a walnut coffee table and perhaps the walnut tv bench - I like walnut.

I should point out that delivery was a whopping £40 which may put some people off.

In summary - Good quality and highly recommended.

I noticed an Ilva store is opening soon in Gateshead Metrocentre. Don't know when as there were no signs with opening dates in.

It's in the building that used to be the M&S furniture store, near the current Ikea store and Asda.
Here I go again on my own....
