nhs has refused my sons operation which insurance company will cover him

My son of 16 has had lots of problems with the nhs as i have been fighting for an operation for almost three years we seen the consultant at warwick and he agreed an operation needed doing as he had waited for his fatty tissue on his breast to go down on its own but it didnt.
He then put in the neccessary forms to get the operation we were told it would be classed as plastic surgery and took this all on board,
Alot of months of waiting and defenately never thought we would be denied for his operation by pct but were it is wrecking his life his confidence is zero he doesnt go out has started now with suicidle thoughts due to this and i am finding it hard to find anywhere any help with this matter he has a bad complex due to the size of the fatty tissue in his boob and i would like to know other than paying 5000 or whatever the cost we cannot afford is there please anything we can do we have had to start allover again with the nhs and we are on a never ending battle all i want is for him to have the operation where can i go to get an insurance that would cover his pre existing health concern to be able for them to operate on him soon this is a must as i am not happy with his head and where it will end up if the operation is not done this is urgent and has a mother i am major concerned any advicewould be really appreciated please

I'm no insurance expert, but i think you'll be hard pushed to find an insurance company that will cover existing problems unfortunately.

Out of interest, why complain about mp's bad spelling, when your post is more or less one long sentence?

Caroline, are you involved with Children and Families Mental Health services? ( CAHMS) If your son is having suicidal thoughts of harming himself due to his condition, he needs to have some proper support in coming to terms with whats going on for him.
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.

No insurer will cover this. You'd better find the £5k if you're that concerned.

Pot, kettle, black. I bet none of them wrote a 332 word sentence (which incidentally is littered with spelling mistakes).

Oh I wish I was a punk rocker with flowers in my hair
  • Thanks for the advice you have been helpful. I really appreciate it.
This wasnt about spelling mistakes just frustration they didnt get his name right, when you go through things like this its important that things are done properly.
I am in progress of getting a loan for the operation but wondered if there was another solution so thanks and wont bother asking advice in future, of here if this is what its about playing with peoples minds, when they are already going through enough coping with a bad situatuation i have spent alot of time following martin and his advice he is a proffessional, maybe he needs to consider giving the moderators and advisers a little lesson in tact, as people are coming on here for advice and not to be treat like that.
I wont be back in a hurry feel even worse now thanks for that.

I have to say that most of the people I deal with get my name wrong as ther eis a more common way of spelling it - why worry about something as minor as this if you are trying to get people to help you?

You need to go back to the doctor and ask if your son can be referred to CAMHS (Child and Adolescant Mental health Service) for his suicidal thought and threatening to cut himself - this is important as when he reaches 18 he will have to find this help on his own and it is harder, you need to get the ball rolling now. Maybe they will be able refer him to have this surgery done if he has no confidence and the situation continues.

If you are that desperate for the op then change GP's and then get referred to another hospital or start saving the money. Can he get a part time job at all so he can start saving?

Are there any exercises he can do to build up the muscles in his chest because this will take the focus off his fatty breast tissue (think female bodybuilders).

And lastly, I don't think you are going to like this but.... there are many of us with hang ups about our body shape and size but, as with lots of things though life, you have to learn to accept that this might be the way you are and learn to accept and deal with them. If he is suicidal over his looks you need to find another focus for him and another way of helping him to accept this is how he is.

However if YOU are constantly fighting to change the way he looks this might actually be the reason why he has no self confidence. It sounds a bit naff but YOU have to be the one to teach him to accept this is how he looks for now , he is still a growing boy and his body still has lots of changes to go through -I cannot believe that at 13 you was fighting to change the way he looks so that begs the question on who is more bothered - you or him? Each time he sees you fighting, arguing and crying because you cannot change the way he looks it is actually you that is making his self confidence plummet. If mum hates the way I look then why should I love myself.

YOU need to change the way you are going about this. Get him to the gym and get him to start upper body exercises as the muscle will stretch the skin and reduce the tissue, if he does not like it being busy go first thing when it is quiet so there are not so many people. However, you need to support him, he is still growing and this could be gone by next year so switch his focus onto something else.

You might think this is psycobabble (sp) but have a think about it.

But thinking about it, why would you be fighting for this op when you son is still growing and still has many body changes to go through. Even if this tissue reduces he will still think he has it because you have made such an issue over it. I find that most bizarre. And this is why it is deemed plastic surgery. It's like 16 year old going for a breast enlargement - mine did not finish growing until I was 21, heck, at 39 my body is still changing - you need to change your focus also. Get him help for the suicidal thoughts but stop fighting where he can see it. Trust me, i have a 6 year old with Autism - they hear and pick up on EVERYTHING they hear you say. I was told last week that my son needs to eat more as he is underweight - he heard that and thinks he is now allowed to spend all day eating sweets because the doctor told him too. And he is 6!!
  • thanks for the advice its really useful to keep fit as he has been constantly and is very much into keeping fit he has alot of stratch marks on his back chest and other areas as this is a very hard thing for him to cope with we dont talk openly feelings from us its always posotive thoughts and actions as it always has been and its only been lately when simple things he is getting turned down for work army and many other things.
This is why an operation is important we are a big family so we do things as a family and to be quite honest what you said is useful advice thanks but we dont make it a conversation ever but he just lacks confidence now due to being restricted so much in all he does and its in his head but its hard to come to terms with as an operation for him is a defenate.
He is the nicest person and he is only affected when he finds it hard top live normally and restricts his favourite hobby swimming you know how horrid some people can be and to be quite honest its a hard slog in just getting the operation but we will do it and hopefully it will go well and he can concentrate on building his life the way he wants.
Thanks you have defenately hit some points which are very important and has a mum its guiding them and trying to give them the best start in life .

So you expect the NHS to pay for plastic surgery? I would rather they paid for something a bit better, like ummmm a operation to save someone's life.

I suffer from "Man boobs". I simply bought a £7 vest from Asda. Its made of Lycra and holds everything in! Give it a go, just go to the mens vest section.

    EDIT: Here's a link: http://direct.asda.com/george/men-s-clothing/bodysculpt-collection/0436,default,sc.html

FYI you don't get muscles etc, it just flattens and tones everything.

    Oh and I'm 17!

    Hi OP.

Sorry to hear of your son's ordeal. I don't think the NHS routinely offer mastopexy surgical procedures unless it is secondary to an underlying/ pre- existing medical condition. It is also unlikely that they would offer it to someone who is very young, as their bodies will still be going through changes.

It sounds like he needs to see a counsellor if he is so keen on having surgery, or at least be formally assessed by somebody like a psychologist; these decisions cannot be taken lightly. No surgeon would operate on a young person just because the patient "wants" something badly; there are too many risks involved, and the end results are not guaranteed. Is that something he would be able to live with, say if the procedure did not give the result he desires?

That's something you need to sit down and try and discuss with him.
