If you feel you have a legitimate complaint, and you really want some action over it, register it by calling Vodafone and saying you want to make an official complaint. Then explain to them exactly what your complaint is. This way it must be recorded and go through the official channels, and appear on their complaint stats. If a lot of people do this, it will ring more alarm bells than pestering customer services or support staff.

If no suitable response is received, you can then refer it to OTELO (Office of the Telecommunications Ombudsman).

You must have an unbranded phone to have received froyo.

I just ordered a Desire and went via one of CPW's sites so i got an unbranded phone
i could have got a slightly better upgrade deal from the network but i thought it was worth it for the unbranded phone

I did but SE said it's not their problem and it had to go through Vodafone, who were the retailer. At the end of the day your warranty is with the reseller not the manufacturer. Anything the manufacturer would do is over and above your rights.

look at the guarantee card that comes with the device, they usually state that manufacturer warranty for a year or two. my htc desire says 2y warranty on my 18m contract. loads of htc owners have sent direct to htc for repairs. read the terms of the warranty card that comes with your phone.

SE told me the phone was under warranty and they would fix it, but all requests for repair under warranty had to go via Vodafone. The would not let me log it direct to them.

Vodafone passed it to their in house repair team first who then refused service under the warranty as the firmware was not the offical vodafone firmware and would not do anything more.

Passing it to SE was not an option it had to go via Vodafone who rejected it.

HTC may be different, SE would not budge it had to go through vodafone.

is this what your guarantee card says that all repairs have to be routed via seller and not via manufacturer. i dont remember seeing anything like that on my htc warranty. the nexus one warranty had some clause against rooting the device but the desire warranty although almost identical device from same manufacturer had a slightly different warranty where the key clause affecting rooting is missing. this issue has been discussed on xda threads or phandroid, i dont remember where though. if you had gone through the warranty information mentioned by SE on their warranty card then you would have know if there was such a clause saying go through seller. many gadgets come with world wide warranty and the buyer might move to a different place where the original seller does not operate and that would make warranty difficult to enforce. as far as i am aware manufacturer has to accept direct applications for warranty if said so in the warranty card. probably SE warranty documents may be different. i will look up on my old SE documentation if it is still around somewhere in the garage and check if i can find it. not that it matters now for you but just to be clear about such guarantee matters. probably some present SE owner might confirm here after going through the documentation.

Suppose I could but SE would not tell me anythin other than go to vodafone.

To be honest it had 2 months on the 18 month contract, after SE told me to go to Voda, and Voda told me to go away I though stuff it, manage for 2 months on an old phone and get a new toy when the 18 months was up.

I knew the risks when I modded it...

The SE paperwork clearly says the guarantee is void if you modify the software so not worth the hassle in the end.
