Hand Baggage - What Are You Allowed Now?

  • So do you still have to use clear bags for your hand luggage?

Also what would happen if someone accidentally put one of the unpermitted things in with their hand luggage?

No you don't have to use clear bags, Rucksacks, laptop cases, carrier bags etc All permitted as long as they conform to size requirements.

If you do have something that's not permited it will either be taken from you or you will have the option to check it in as hold luggage. If you choose the former i suspect you're highly unlikely to see that item again.

I'm going to Canada soon and my lips will be cracked and dried out if I can't take lipstick or lipbalm. Why on earth would they ban make up? They must be women haters!

  • What happens with things like Asthma pumps and pills? Would I have to get a note from the docs about what it is/why it can't go into the hold?

Pills and Asthma pumps are excluded from the exemptions, it's only liquids, gels, pastes etc you can't take, unless it is a bonafide prescription medicene for which you will need evidence to support this from a doctor.
  • Sorry to seem dense, but can I take books and lip balm bought past check in on board a plane to America?
  • Books are ok- and you can take these through checkin- ie do not have to buy at airport, but it says no liquid based products on flights to US.

I think a lip balm is liquid based? I supose you could melt it down?

I am sure if you ask when you are at the airport, the shop will know what is and is not allowed.

  • I know this is too late for the original OP but it looks like there will be some changes next week to the restrictions:

I would wait until next monday or Tuesday for anyone travelling after next weekend before working out what to pack.

I agree with the lip balm issue. I travelled from East Midlands airport in August and ended up spending almost £20 on a Clinque lip gloss from Duty Free. There was very little retail opportunity after security at that airport.

I am flying again this week, this time from Manchester. I go from Terminal 3 on this trip and do not think the shopping is great airside. On the Manchester Airport website it states that lipstick is excluded from the ban on gels and liquids. I intend to put a lippie I don't care about in my hand luggage. That way if it gets confiscated, I will not be upset.
  • Laptops MP3s are OK. No Lipsticks or balms at the moment but that may change next week. Books are fine too. No liquids at all at the mo either. Ask the crew, the airline i work for is putting on extra amenity packs for the passengers beacuse of this
