Oh the irony, I went home today and find out that one of the kids or someone has gone and broken my laptop screen! Now I am in the market for a new screen or laptop and need to start looking that up.

Laptop. Excess is £100 and getting my hard drive back is an extra £35 if they can't repair/isn't worth repairing.

How old is the laptop, £100-£135 on a repir sounds pretty dubious value for a repair unless its under 18 months old -whats the make and model?

Send it without the disk, buy a usb caddy and transfer your data to another pc. If they decide to replace the unit completely, wipe the disk properly, and send it.

    Caddy £3.75

Even if they decide to replace the unit they are unlikely to request the HDD. They are usually aware of the security implications.

If you have an external HDD, it costs nothing to back up your info.

If you have an external hard disk, and can either see the screen now, or use an external screen, you could back up, then reset to factory defaults, and wipe free space now, before you send it

FYI a quick google you can buy a replacement screen for £65ish depending on size

    http://www.google.co.uk/products?oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&q=Presario+CQ60&scoring=p&price1=35.00&price2=90.00&lnk=prsugg&show=dd

...could be moderately labour intensive to replace depending on whether they supply the 'top hafl' of the laptop or just the screen but nothing excessive, depends if you're up for a bit of DIY, at £100 you're paying a bit over the odds for the repair, insurance or no

£135 is cheap for replacement laptop screen.
We do 5 or 6 of these a week due to the disturbing amount of laptop abuse out there....
If you took it to PC World it would cost you about £240.
I would actually be doing the job at a loss for £135. Normally charge £140, unless it's something unusual like a odd sized netbook or a Sony....
Then your looking at, at least £180....
But still cheaper than PC World....

So, you would be making a loss at £135, but breaking even or making a profit at £140??

If the part, in this case is £65, pray tell us quite how you "would be making a loss" when charging £135.

Not insinuating that you are overcharging, but you certainly won't be making a loss. :)

If the user paid for the part, I'd charge £20 to fit (I don't like outlaying too much on private work).

Just take the drive out before it gets collected, there's no need for it to be in, and most return to base repairs are reset to factory settings without any rhyme nor reason.
