as other threads record, 18866 and 1899 were featured in a national newspaper; perhaps they've been deluged with new applications

the service is still working ...

I tried to register with 1899 yesterday. After filling in all my details and card details, I was told all now ok. However, I was unable to use it. Then today I received email which said "Unfortunately your 1899 internet registration has failed. Our apologies, but due to lack of capacity it is currently not possible to register". This came from donotreply@1899.com.
I had exactly the same just now.

Just in case this helps (and people don't see my post in the other thread)

I (and one or two others) had problems registering with 1899 last year (seem to remember getting message about "lack of capacity" actually on web page at end of signup as well as by email I think, so this solution may not work). The way round it was to register using your mobile number instead of your landline number. If registering then works ok, you just login and add your landline number and remove your mobile number (unless you want to keep it in your list of registered numbers). Then when you login in future, just use your landline number.
  • 18866 is secure now - I just checked it !

I signed up for 1899 a couple of days ago and had no problems either accessing their site or registering for service, although I've yet to receive any email from them! I just called the number provided to get my account number and the service was up and running within the hour. No problems accessing my details on their site either yesterday or today and according to their blurb, the site is secure:

"All information submitted is secure and encrypted using SSL-Technology.
NOTE: If you are using Internet Explorer, we strongly suggest you upgrade to version 6 for security reasons. IE5 users, click here for an alternative (non secure) login.

    * Your 1899 account number can be found in the subscription confirmation email from 1899. You can also call our freephone number 0808-170 1899 from a registered telephone for a customer number reminder."

  • I managed to register with 1899 yesterday after weeks of trying, I registered my mobile first and then went back in after having that accepted and entered my home number and deleted my mobile.

I found the solution in another thread.

I have received a list of call rates from 18866 this morning and it says that calls to mobiles are 14p/min weekdays and 4p/min weekends. NOT what it says on their site.???

I also have an orchid phone dailler which is fantastic, if not a little involved to set up - but once you sort it out it is very easy to use and update. Heartily recommended.

    Si.

Many thanks, just tried this and it seems to have worked! Really really appreciate it - now my already small phone bill can be "thirded" (does that work the same as halved?!)

    Cheers!

  • At last - site back up and sign in page is now secure! Looks like they solved the problem.
  • Call 1899 does not currently seem to be using secure encrytion when I log in, even though the log on page says it does. I have sent the following to the customer service email address:

"Your site is NOT currently using secure encryption. When I log in the page is http (not https) and no padlock appears. I wanted to update my credit card details but this would mean anyone monitoring the web site could get hold of mine or any other customers details. For some reason my credit card details are said to have expired and asked me to update on web site. I do not know if I entered the details incorrectly originally or this is a ploy by a hacker to get peoples details. Please take a look ASAP."

    (1) Has anyone else been told there credit card has expired when calling 1899
(this could just be that I entered my details incorrectly when registering)
    (2) Does anyone else get an unsecure session when they log in?

I have logged into call18866 and that logs in using https and the pad lock appears. I have also tried the sign up process for call1899 and that is secure.

If anyone is having the same issues as I am do not enter any any credit card information into the site as it will be transferred as plain test and not encrypted.

Unfortunately call1899 do not have a contact number so I do not know how long it will take for them to pick up my email
