1899 sign up (merged threads)

The call1899 signup form that asks for credit card details does not appear to be encrypted (do a rt-mouse click and look at properties) nor does it point to a https secure server. I emailed them about this and only got an automated reply. Does anyone know if it is in fact safe?

I was concerned about this but with the number of people of MSE who rave about this I thought it was worth the risk. I signed up on Tuesday and all ok so far. Just keep on eye on your cc after signing up.

I have not registered with 1899 but have done so with 18866 so I logged on to their site just to check and it clearly states that sign-up is encrypted.
Have been with them for 3 months and no probs. so far.

  • It may say it's secure but most secure sites have a padlock at the bottom of the window and 18866 seems to be the same sign up form!

Not sure what you guys are looking at but the sign up window (opens up a seperate one from the main one) has the padlock and is also a https connection, so it at least has basic encryption.

Suggest you look again (not the main window).

Hi, from memory I am pretty sure there was a padlock when I put in my credit card number, however, after a chat with the credit card company, they said to keep an eye on my bill, ie when having just paid the credit card account, it takes another four weeks or so before you get your next bill, so to check each week to see if there are any odd amounts on it, before the next bill, either on the net or by phone, if Martin reads these, perhaps he can shed a bit of light on the security side of things, my question was when looking at your invoice, you put in your phone number and your customer number and there is no padlock,, I do not know whether it is of any use to anyone, but felt a bit concerned. Cheers, oap

I've been trying to enrol on 1899 for days but each time I go to:
    http://www.call1899.co.uk
    I get the following:
    "The page cannot be displayed
The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser settings."
I have software to stop pop-ups and I'm wondering if this is what is stopping me from gaining access to their site. Any ideas? (Hope they haven't gone to the wall!)
  • I think 1899 and 18866 are trying to do some upgrades (possibly to take acount of concerns such as those expressed on MSE about the lack of the yellow padlock on supposedly secure pages).

Last night, an extra line appeared on 18866's login page offering an insecure logon for those not on IE6 but a secure logon for those who were. I am - but attempting to login via the secure route produced a 'hang' whereas login via the insecure route was immediate.

This morning, attempting to open anything on 1899 or 18866's sites produces 'The page cannot be displayed.'
